During a press conference in Warsaw, Polish ophthalmologists presented an innovative method of screening for glaucoma using artificial intelligence. The test helps to detect changes in the eye that contribute to the development of glaucoma early. Patients from Warsaw will be able to sign up for such a study from December 2.
Glaucoma is detected too late
Glaucoma is a disease of the elderly. Taking into account the aging society in Poland, more and more people will be at risk of developing this disease. Glaucoma is one of the three most common causes of vision loss (along with cataracts and macular degeneration). As emphasized at the press conference by professor Jerzy Szaflik, initiator and co-creator of the new glaucoma screening test, out of 900 thousand people who are ill, only about 350 are treated. The rest are unaware that they are at risk of blindness, because the disease does not cause disturbing symptoms for a long time. It manifests itself only at an advanced stage, and in 70 percent. patients are detected too late to save their eyesight. Ophthalmologists want to improve these statistics, but need tools to better detect the disease.
What is the study developed by Polish ophthalmologists?
The screening test developed by Professor Szaflik’s team will help select those people who are suspected of developing glaucoma. This is evidenced by changes in the optic disc. With the help of a computer examination, with the use of artificial intelligence, previously taken pictures of the fundus and non-contact measurement of intraocular pressure are analyzed. The examination takes a few minutes. After the next few, we get the results.
The system assigns images of the fundus to the “healthy” or “sick” category on the basis of a database of over 2,5 thousand. eye pictures provided by the Glaucoma Clinic of the Clinical Ophthalmology Hospital and the Eye Microsurgery Center «Laser» in Warsaw.
The study was tested on a group of several hundred patients at the ophthalmology clinic in Siedlce. In Warsaw, they can be performed from December 2 at the Glaucoma Center. Prior telephone registration is required. The test is performed free of charge for the next three months.
