An inhaler is a medical device that allows the inhalation of drugs and solutions for therapeutic or prophylactic purposes. It is used in diseases related to the upper and lower respiratory tract, such as cough, bronchitis, sick sinuses, cystic fibrosis, colds, asthma, runny nose, and allergies.
Children’s inhalers – how do they work?
The drug is introduced into inhaler in liquid form, and the device nebulizes, during which the liquid turns into an aerosol. The child inhales it through the mouth and nose, thanks to which the medicine goes directly to the respiratory system. The way in which the drug is broken down into particles is of great importance during treatment. In the case of the treatment of the lower respiratory tract, it should be broken down into smaller ones (0,5-8 micrometers), which are designed to reach the bronchi and alveoli. Larger particles (above 8 micrometers) are to help in the treatment of nasal congestion, larynx and throat.
Advantages of using the inhaler there are no age restrictions, quick and effective treatment, and fewer side effects than when the drug is administered orally. Inhalation use can usually significantly reduce the patient’s dose.
Children’s inhalers – which one to choose?
There are several dozen different types of nebulizers on sale, which may cause problems with choosing the right one. It is worth knowing that these devices are divided into two types: ultrasonic and piston.
Ultrasonic inhaler – with the use of ultrasound, it changes the chemical structure of drugs, therefore it cannot be used for all drugs; the advantage is fast and quiet operation.
Piston inhaler (pneumatic) – all medications and saline can be used in it; it often has a thermostat to maintain the correct temperature of the solution.
When choosing an inhaler the medicine used should be considered first of all – if ultrasound can reduce or otherwise adversely affect its effect, then the solution will be piston inhaler. In both versions inhaler the device should have a breathing mask that fits the child’s mouth. If the drug is given to a smaller child, you can make its use more pleasant and choose inhalator shaped like an animal. An interesting and practical solution is the breath-synchronized system, which allows you to apply the drug only while inhaling. This allows you to limit the amount of unused drug. They are used for severe changes in the respiratory system (such as cystic fibrosis) inhalers with a special pressure compressor.
Children’s inhalers – ranking
On the web you can find many pages on which it is presented ranking of inhalers, arranged on the basis of shopping popularity and the opinions of the parents themselves. Checking it can help you make the right purchasing decision. It is worth consulting the choice with a doctor or pharmacist.
Remember to clean all plastic parts after each inhalation inhaler – warm water with a little detergent is enough.
