Angina is an acute inflammatory process involving the mucosa and lymphatic tissue of the palatine tonsils with the accompanying pharyngitis. It can occur as an isolated condition, but is often associated with pharyngitis.

Angina coexists with many infectious diseases, such as: mononucleosis, diphtheria, scarlet fever, sometimes with measles, chickenpox, influenza, etc. Recurrent inflammatory changes in the throat and tonsils are also observed in the course of neoplastic diseases. The incidence increases with age, peaking at age 7. There is a seasonality of cases, the greatest number is observed in the autumn-winter period. The disease is mainly associated with bacterial, viral and fungal infections.

Bacterial pharyngitis and tonsillitis

Most often the disease is caused by streptococci.

Symptoms: usually acute onset, high fever, sore throat, abdominal pain, sometimes vomiting.

In older children, a feeling of general breakdown. The child is inflamed, restless, refuses food due to malaise and difficulty swallowing. Younger children often report abdominal discomfort. The tonsils are enlarged, vivid red, there is exudate in the crypts or on the surface of the tonsils. The submandibular lymph nodes are enlarged and painful.

If you want to confirm suspicion of strep throat, do the Angina Home Test – ANGINA STREP A, which you can find at Medonet Market.

Complications

The most common local complication of angina is peritonsillar abscess with recurrence of general and local symptoms (severe unilateral local pain, difficulty swallowing and speaking, sometimes trismus). Systemic complications include acute glomerulonephritis, rheumatic disease, myocarditis and endocarditis.

Treatment: antibiotic therapy, absolute bed rest, liquid-mush diet. In older children, gargling with slightly salted water, sage, chamomile. Often, relief is provided by cold drinks or ice cream. You should not put compresses on the neck, which unnecessarily increase the congestion of the throat and lymph nodes.

With recurrent bacterial pharyngitis, climate change and going to the seaside or mountains sometimes improve.
