Inflammation of the kidneys during pregnancy: impaired renal function, pain

The most common kidney diseases during pregnancy are pyelonephritis and glomerulonephritis. Pyelonephritis occurs in 15-20% of pregnant women, while glomerulonephritis is rare due to the body’s production of large amounts of corticosteroids. These hormones prevent the development of the disease.

Symptoms of pyelonephritis during pregnancy:

  • Lower back or side pain;
  • decreased appetite;
  • increased body temperature;
  • Difficulty urinating
  • vomiting – with purulent pyelonephritis;
  • increased sweating.

Constant pain in the kidneys during pregnancy is a symptom of the inflammatory process. If you find it, you should immediately consult a doctor. The gynecologist will prescribe tests and, if the diagnosis is confirmed, will refer you to a nephrologist for consultation.

Specialists will prescribe treatment, which will consist of taking antibacterial drugs that are allowed during pregnancy.

Pyelonephritis is dangerous because it can provoke premature birth, poisoning of the child with toxins and disorders in its development, as well as malfunctions of the mother’s nervous system. If the disease is not cured in time, it can become chronic.

Glomerulonephritis is an inflammatory kidney disease that occurs when the immune system malfunctions. It is rare in pregnant women and manifests itself as:

  • Severe swelling;
  • convulsive seizures;
  • high temperature;
  • pain in the side;
  • high blood pressure.

Glomerulonephritis develops rapidly, the symptoms of the disease appear immediately. The disease, like pyelonephritis, is treated in a hospital setting. For therapy, diuretics, electrophoresis, ultrasound, bed rest and dietary adjustments are used.

A disease suffered during pregnancy causes a delay in the development of the child, a miscarriage. With chronic glomerulonephritis of a severe course, women should not become pregnant, as this poses a threat to their health.

Inflammation of the kidneys while carrying a child is a dangerous condition that requires medical advice and immediate hospitalization. In questions about the health of the baby and the expectant mother, one cannot hesitate.
