Various pathogens (bacteria, viruses, parasites, toxins) can enter the retina and the adjacent choroid through the bloodstream. Then inflammation develops, the symptoms of which depend on the site of damage to the retina and choroid.

If the inflammation affects the macula, the patient notices scotomas in the visual field, flashes, color vision disturbances, changes in the shape of the objects viewed. However, if the inflammation occurs in the peripheral parts of the fundus, it may be asymptomatic and the ophthalmologist accidentally detects post-inflammatory scars. Inflammation sometimes develops in the course of an infectious disease or due to purulent lesions in various organs, so you should report any visual disturbances to your doctor immediately. Patients report to the doctor too late, explaining this by the lack of pain symptoms. Retinal inflammatory scarring often damages eyesight irreversibly.

Retinal degeneration

It is a consequence of inflammatory changes or it occurs spontaneously, often as a congenital or hereditary disease. Some of these diseases appear at an early age, others progress slowly and are diagnosed in adults. Macular degeneration causes deterioration of visual acuity and scotomas in the visual field. Peripheral retinal degeneration (most often pigmentary degeneration) causes a narrowing of the visual field and impaired adaptation to darkness.

Treatment of retinal degeneration is symptomatic and often not very effective.

Genetic testing for retinal degeneration is available on Medonet Market.
