The subtropical diva has a bright color, which is given not by modest flowers, but by pre-flowering. The most common colors are purple and crimson, but there are varieties of yellow, white and peach. The lush pre-flowers are so prolific that the green leaves of the bougainvillea are not visible behind them.

In hot climates, the bougainvillea flower thrives on the street

The plant is a creeping, thorny tree vine, bush or small tree. The varieties of this flower differ from each other in color and density of thorns:

  • Bougainvillea glabrous has sparse thorns and almost no pubescent leaves.
  • Bougainvillea is wonderful covered with many thorns, it has fluffy leaves.

There are about 14 varieties of this vibrant plant. They can perfectly decorate a room, vines will wrap around a support of any shape and size.

This southerner grows well in the hot and humid climate of South America. Such conditions must be created for her. Liana needs a lot of sun, nutritious soil and moist air. Water trapped at the roots can harm the tropical beauty.

Growing a bougainvillea flower, caring for a plant at home

Liana can only be propagated by cuttings or layering, it has no seeds. Growing this flower on the street, covering it for the winter, will not work. Bougainvillea loves very hot weather. Even a little frost will destroy her. The plant should spend autumn, winter and spring in indoor conditions.

For planting, you need to choose the sunniest windowsill. No drafts should be allowed. In January-March, cuttings should be placed in a pot with an earthen mixture of sod and leafy soil, humus and river sand. All components are in equal quantities. The size of the pot should not be more than 9 cm in diameter. To grow, the cuttings need a temperature not higher than 18 ° C and a light window sill.

When the sprout becomes 5 cm high, it must be pinched. This will allow the vine to branch. Over time, the sprout will be cramped in a small pot, it must be transplanted into a larger volume. There are several mistakes to avoid during the landing phase:

  • If you want to bring a cutting from warm countries, cut off the woody shoot. Its thickness should be about a pencil. It is impossible to grow bougainvillea from a thin green sprout.
  • Never plant the cuttings directly in a large pot. A plant with such a planting will not be able to form a powerful root system. The transplant must be done in stages. The next planting container should be 2 sizes larger than the previous one.

Do not forget about the drainage, which must be placed at the bottom of the pot so that the water does not stagnate. The plant needs to be fed and watered regularly.

Bougainvillea blooms profusely and for a long time, but it has breaks. At these moments, it is necessary to do the formative pruning of the faded sprouts. In good conditions, the vine can bloom all year round, but this will weaken it. Transfer the plant to a cooler room for the winter, where the air temperature will be 10-12 ° C, and reduce watering and feeding.

At first glance, a tropical liana seems to be a capricious beauty, in fact, it is quite unpretentious for such an ornamental plant. If there is warmth, food and sufficient watering, she will do her best to please with abundant flowering 7-9 months a year.
