Indoor fern: types and names

Indoor fern is a perennial plant that can decorate a home or office with its green mass. There are many varieties of these flowers, but they are all demanding to care for.

Among all the varieties of these plants, there are stunted and tall species. In the latter, leaves can reach 2 m in length. There are moisture-loving plants. Their leaves are light green, strongly dissected. Drought-resistant ferns have leaves that are dense to the touch and are covered with a waxy coating.

The following types of ferns are suitable for growing at home:

  • “Nephrolepis”. One of the most unpretentious species, which includes up to 30 varieties of plants. It has spectacular openwork leaves up to 50 cm in length.
  • “Maidenhair”. Plants are compact, in the form of a bush. The leaves are small, rounded, growing on thin branches.
  • Davallia. The species has dense green foliage. A feature of ferns are powerful red rhizomes that hang along the edges of hanging baskets.
  • “Asplenium” (“Kostenets”). In this species, many children grow up, the leaf plates are feathery, strongly dissected. Popular variety “Nest fern”. It has dense xiphoid leaves.
  • Blehnum. The fern is like a palm tree. Its crown reaches 1 m in height. Leaves are hard, dissected.

Large fern species such as Nephrolepis, Blehnum or Asplenium nesting are best planted in large pots as single plants. Their leaves are long. The rest of the varieties can be planted in several pieces in hanging baskets.

How to care for all types of indoor ferns

Ferns prefer shade, so they don’t need abundant lighting. The room should be warm, humid air.

Care, depending on the variety, is as follows:

  • Nephrolepis, Asplenium and Adintum are thermophilic plants. During the dormant period, the temperature should not fall below 16˚С, in the spring-autumn season, it is necessary to maintain indicators of 17-24˚С. Plants need diffused light.
  • Ferns like “Nephrolepis” and “Adintum” prefer high humidity, so provide them with abundant watering. “Asplenium” during the rest period should be watered once every 1-2 weeks.
  • Davallia loves high air temperatures from 14 to 24˚С. The species is shade-tolerant, the plants can be grown away from the window. Ferns prefer moderate watering, do not like waterlogging.
  • Blehnum is very fond of moisture and needs lighting. Do not spray the leaves.

Ferns need to be transplanted every 1-2 years. Soil is suitable, which consists of soil, coniferous soil, humus, peat and sand in a ratio of 2: 1: 1: 1: 1.

Home fern not only decorates the room, but also brings peace and quiet to the home. It clears negative emotions. Ferns also moisturize the air and absorb harmful substances.
