Individuation: the steps towards “self-realization”

Every human being has the opportunity to realize their potential. Of course, it is not an easy task, it involves stages, deep reflection, concrete changes, but it would be a shame to miss this experience.

Self-awareness

We are all aware of the things society wants us to do, or the people our families want us to be. The potential of an individual is the set of personal dispositions still incompletely exploited which can allow him to evolve. With what resources? Motivation, of course, is what makes you act, but also the need to know yourself in order to learn the real “me”. Knowing what makes you live, what nourishes your soul and what drains your mind, and how to know the difference to choose well as you move forward in life. The only person you spend your entire existence with is yourself … It is therefore important to identify the qualities that make you unique, to identify your core values, those that you think are important in the way you live and to work. They’re what shape your perception of yourself, others, and the world around you.

Studies suggest that you will find your life more meaningful, and feel a deeper sense of well-being, if you live a life that is “in line with values” or in accordance with what is most important to you. While living in harmony with one’s values has implications for well-being, the inconsistency between personal and professional values has been associated with burnout.

How to go towards the realization of the “self”?

Being honest

Knowing yourself means recognizing different parts of who you are, who you are and who you are. Getting to know yourself is all about developing a real picture of who you are, including the parts you are proud of and the parts you struggle with every now and then. It is not a question of criticizing yourself but simply of recognizing all the aspects of your personality, of discovering new things about you. Which ones make you uncomfortable, which stress you out or on the contrary, which ones make you happy? These emotional signals can tell you if you are trying to avoid a topic. Why ? And don’t avoid the past or the future, while thinking about the past is vital to knowing yourself, making plans for the future is just as important.

Some questions to ask yourself

  • What kinds of things are you curious about?
  • What fascinates you?
  • What are the five words that describe you?
  • What do you like to do even when you are tired, in a hurry? Why ?
  • What have you done in your life that you are most proud of?
  • Think about the good and bad decisions you have made in your life
  • How would you like others to see you?
  • Who is the most important person in your life?
  • What is true for you no matter what?
  • What failure have you turned into your biggest lesson?
  • Where do you see yourself in five years? In ten years ?
  • What are your skills, your talents? What are you good at?
  • What role does gratitude play in your life?
  • What do you think of the way you see old age someday?
  • What do you think is the meaning of your life?
  • What is your highest fundamental value?
  • How comfortable are you with your own mortality?
  • How does your presence here in the universe change humanity for the better?

Towards real freedom?

Self-realization, honoring the efforts you make every day, recognizing your strengths and skills as well as the areas in which you need to develop requires time, patience, and self-compassion. Writing in a journal a little bit each day can play a role in improving your self-knowledge. Instead of just going through life and being responsive to the behaviors of others, ask yourself what you see as your life’s mission. Daily reflection and meditation can help you cultivate a deeper understanding of who you are. Over time, you can build on these discoveries to create a deep and meaningful relationship with yourself, freeing yourself from disturbing thoughts, emotions without blocking them but observing them, observing yourself with that hindsight which, with the time will bring you true mastery of the mind. The most positive thoughts should become automatic and give you real control over your mind and greater freedom.
