Indian summer raspberry: variety

Indian summer raspberry: variety

Raspberry “Indian Summer” is one of the first remontant varieties bred by Russian breeders. It got its name from the fact that it bears fruit until the very frost, and the harvest can be harvested in the Indian summer. The variety is not very fruitful, susceptible to diseases, the berries are not transportable, therefore it did not receive wide popularity. But there are amateur gardeners who liked this raspberry.

Features of raspberry “Indian Summer”

The variety is able to withstand fairly severe frosts. Without shelter, it can withstand up to -30 degrees. Due to this, it is successfully cultivated in the northern regions.

Raspberry “Indian Summer” has large sweet fruits

The raspberry variety “Indian Summer” has a number of distinctive features:

  1. The height of the bush is up to 1,5 meters, the shoots have thorns, the growth is weak.
  2. The berries are medium-sized, up to three grams, sweet and sour, do not have a characteristic aroma.
  3. Low yield, about 1 kg per bush. But the variety is appreciated for the fact that in rainy weather the berries do not change their taste and remain sweet.
  4. The harvested crop requires immediate processing, as the berries deteriorate very quickly.
  5. Fruiting from mid-July until frost.

Indian Summer is easily affected by spider mites, purple spot and powdery mildew. But resistant to gray rot and curl.

Breeding and caring for raspberries

Taking care of raspberries is easy. But a number of measures are required to increase yields:

  1. Choose the right landing site. It should be sunny, no drafts.
  2. Maintain optimal spacing between rows and bushes. The row spacing is 1,5 meters, between the bushes – at least 0,5 meters.
  3. Pay attention to predecessors. Raspberries do not like places where nightshade crops grew.
  4. Change the place of the raspberry tree periodically. The soil under the raspberries gets tired, and the roots secrete substances that affect the yield. A large accumulation of these substances inhibits the plant and slows down growth. After the raspberry tree, the land must rest for at least seven years.

It is better to breed raspberries of this variety with cuttings, since it gives few young shoots. To get good planting material, it is necessary to bend the shoot to the ground and dig in in the fall before frost. In the spring, a new seedling will grow from each bud. Then it is enough to separate them and plant them in the ground.

The variety is mainly cultivated for fresh consumption. Long-term fruiting makes it possible to obtain fresh product until late autumn. The berries are also suitable for processing – they can be canned, made jams and frozen.
