In Sweden, new COVID-19 cases are falling, but the cause for concern is the confirmation of 71 cases of the Indian version of the coronavirus, Anders Tegnell’s chief epidemiologist said on Thursday.
«Overall, the number of new infections is declining, except in regions where new variants of the coronavirus have been reported. Especially dangerous is the Indian variant (delta), which is present mainly in the region of Vaermland (24 cases) and Blekinge (14) »- announced Tegnell.
- Norway has won with the pandemic. Why has Sweden failed to do so?
Vaermland is located in the west of Sweden on the border with Norway, and Blekinge in the south-east. Ferries from Poland call at the port in Karlskrona. These provinces have increased their control measures in view of the situation.
The Public Health Office has decided to increase the country-wide monitoring of PCR tests in terms of the possibility of the delta variant occurrence.
The Indian variant is believed to be more contagious. According to Tegnell, two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine are also effective against infection with this variant.
