High blood pressure results from the uneven excretion of certain substances from the body, including sodium, phosphate, and potassium. Indapamide is a substance found in diuretic drugs that regulate the body’s mineral balance and thus lower blood pressure.

Indapamide – indications for taking

Indapamide is a substance that works in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. It is used when the patient has primary arterial hypertension or edema caused by congestive heart failure. Indapamide can be used as monotherapy as well as in combination therapy with other drugs.

Indapamide — leki

Indapamide is an active substance present in the composition of several dozen diuretic drugs. Among them are:

  1. The tablet names are: Diuresin SR, Indapamide Krka, Indapamide SR, Indapamide SR Genoptim, Indapamidum 123ratio, Indapen SR, Indix SR, Ipres long 1,5, Ivipamide, Opamide, Symapamide SR,
  2. prolonged-release coated tablets: Rawel, Tertensif SR,
  3. coated tablets: Indapen, Indapres.

Indapamide – action and properties

Indapamide is a diuretic, which means it has a diuretic effect. It has a sulphonamide structure, and in terms of properties it is similar to hydrochlorothiazide, as well as to the group of thiazides and thiazide-like substances. However, indapamide differs from the mentioned hydrochlorothiazide in a longer half-life, ranging from 14 to 18 hours. The substance binds in 71-79 percent. with plasma proteins and is metabolized in the liver.

Drugs containing indapamide lower blood pressure by reducing the volume of extracellular fluids, as well as by acting directly on blood vessels and reducing vascular resistance. The action of indapamide is in the loop of Henle (at the end of the cortical ascending section) and at the beginning of the distal canal. During treatment with Indapamide, the following occurs:

  1. inhibition of the reabsorption of chloride ion, which retains sodium and water in the tubule,
  2. increasing the excretion of magnesium, sodium and potassium,
  3. excretion of bicarbonate and hydrogen ions, as well as phosphates,
  4. calcium retention in the body,
  5. restriction of uric acid excretion (there is a risk of gout),
  6. the paradoxical effect of reducing polyuria.

Indapamide – contraindications and interactions

The side effects and pharmacological interaction of Indapamide are very similar to those observed with other thiazides. People suffering from thyroid dysfunction should refrain from taking the substance. This is because indapamide lowers the levels of iodine in the blood, which is bound to serum proteins.

All diuretics, including those containing indapamide, work to increase the amount of urine you pass out. However, they do not adversely affect carbohydrate metabolism. Thanks to this, they can be used by patients struggling with diabetes or hypertension.

Before use, read the leaflet, which contains indications, contraindications, data on side effects and dosage as well as information on the use of the medicinal product, or consult your doctor or pharmacist, as each drug used improperly is a threat to your life or health.
