The recovery in the sector seems to be knocking at the door. The small and still insufficient data on economic activation for the Spanish economy as a whole are beginning to have a favorable opinion among hoteliers.
La Nebrija University, Together with Spanish Federation of Hoteliers (FEHR), have spent years developing a study on the Hospitality Confidence Indicator.
For its preparation, the information has been compiled through a representative group of companies in the sector through questionnaires.
According to their latest data, presented in the referenced report, corresponding to the second quarter of this year, the hospitality businessmen state that their sales have been better than those of the previous year.
This upturn, which represents a positive result in the confidence of entrepreneurs regarding the evolution of their businesses compared to the previous year, is the first that has occurred since the Indicator was prepared in 2009.
If we also look at the data from the previous quarter, there has also been an improvement in their figures, in the words of the hoteliers.
Regarding the future, optimism reigns over the sector and these two months of growth make them see that the figures pick up height and take off, slowly in order to consolidate growth at the end of the year.
The tourism
Another very important data that supports the opinion of the hoteliers is the expenditure made by tourists in the first 6 months of the year, yielding a total figure of 26.350 million euros, a figure that increases with respect to the previous year by 8%
The figures released by the Institute of Tourism Studies (IET), in the study of the Tourist Expenditure Survey (EGATUR), offer us an increase in average expenditure per tourist close to half a point (0,5%), consolidating the daily figure around € 111.
The citizens of the countries that contributed the most to this disbursement were:
- United Kingdom with 19,8%
- Germany with 16,7%
- Nordic countries with 6%
The Spanish regions and communities that benefited the most from this increase were the Canary Islands and Catalonia, concentrating 23% and 22,7% of spending, respectively.
On the other hand, the largest increase compared to the previous year with a rise of 14% was the autonomous community of Andalusia, followed by the community of Madrid with an increase of 12,8%.
The negative data is for the Balearic Islands, which presented a decrease of 3,6% in spending, but we must be optimistic, since the figure for tourist spending for the month of June rose to six billion … Increasing this by 4% compared to to the same data of the previous year.
The job
The total number of people employed in the hospitality sector was 1.421.300 workers, a figure that represents an increase of 5%, according to data from the Labor Force Survey (EPA) of the National Institute of Statistics (INE), this increase represents 69.300 more workers than there were in the same period of the previous year,
Restaurants and bars were where the most jobs were created, with 58.300 more workers.
This rebound places Ceuta and Murcia in the highest place for job creation, but on the contrary, there are still not so good data, since in Asturias, the Balearic Islands, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura and Madrid, the occupation decreased.
Prudence and restraint are the premises that continue to be given from the government, but the entrepreneurial activity of the hospitality sector seems to be starting to lead growth in Spain, let’s all collaborate on this …
