The state of New York has run seven million tests for the coronavirus since the start of the pandemic. On Saturday, the ninth day in a row, less than 1% of them were positive.

«Our numbers reflect the tremendous efforts of New Yorkers. While other states are seeing an increase in the number of cases of infection, our number remains low, »New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Sunday.

Of the 77 tests for COVID-692 carried out on Saturday in the state, 19 percent were registered with a positive result. It was the ninth day in a row when they were below 0,78 percent. In the city of New York alone, the rate was 1%.

Cuomo called the large number of tests performed and the persistently low infection rate “a remarkable achievement New Yorkers should be proud of”.

The 607 new cases detected on Saturday have increased the total number of cases since the outbreak of the pandemic to 425. There were 508 patients with the virus in hospitals in the last 527 hours.

In the last 24 hours, another six New Yorkers have lost their way to the virus. This brings the total death toll across the state to 25. In early April, when the pandemic reached its peak, 250 people were dying a day.

«However, we must not become complacent (…) Everyone must remember to wear a mask, maintain social distance and wash their hands regularly. New York, stay tough in the fight! » Cuomo urged.

As state officials attribute many new infections to the participation of people, especially young people, in large assemblies, 1170 restaurants and bars were inspected on Saturday to make sure that the rules, including social distancing, were being followed.

According to the governor’s office, the state police and the licensing authority for the sale, production and distribution of alcohol found violations of regulations at 33 catering establishments in the city and Long Island.
