In recent days, there has been a very sharp increase in the incidence of COVID-19 around the world. The number of occupied beds is also increasing more and more in many countries. In Great Britain, the number of hospitalizations increased by 54% in the last week. Why is this happening?
- In Great Britain, on December 29, a record number of 183 was recorded. new people get sick with the coronavirus
- On December 26, nearly 1200 patients were admitted to hospitals in England (there are no data from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). A week earlier, 799 people required hospitalization
- This is especially true of children. The coronavirus attacks children in many countries

Western European countries are struggling with the next wave of coronavirus disease increases. This is especially true of Great Britain. There, the fourth wave of the pandemic started in July, and the infection situation has not really calmed down since then.
- Gloomy forecasts for 2022. Up to 3 billion infections with Omikron
However, what has happened in recent days has exceeded even the darkest predictions. On Christmas Eve, there were almost 122 thousand. new cases. And on December 29, the bar jumped to the value of 183 thousand. This is “the merit” of the new variant of the Omikron, which has mastered Great Britain to the greatest extent of all European countries.
This is starting to translate into the scale of hospitalization. During the week, the number of occupied beds increased by 54%. “ This is very worrying as it is growing faster than forecasts for the Omikron variant said, ” Dr. Eric Feigl-Ding, an epidemiologist, wrote on Twitter.
Feigl-Ding noted that this increase is largely due to the increasing number of children hospitalized. The same is happening in other countries where there are more and more Omicron cases and higher daily infection rates, such as the United States and France.

Fortunately, the death figures remain – in the UK – at a similar level. From mid-November they do not exceed 200. The daily weekly average in the last days is around 100, even though infections started to rise in the second decade of December. We will soon see how the recent dramatic spike in the number of cases will translate into the number of deaths.
More and more hospitalizations – why is this happening?
Another increase in the number of hospitalized people for specialists is no surprise, but the scale is. The Omikron variant, according to many studies and data from many countries, causes a milder course of COVID-19, but when the number of cases increases as dramatically as recently, even a small percentage of severe cases gives serious numbers.
The second thing is children. From the moment a new variant is discovered, it is said that children are at particular risk. Omicron infects all unvaccinated, vaccinated and convalescents. However, it is the unvaccinated person who experiences the most. And children and adolescents are the last group to enter the immunization program, so the youngest were the main carriers of the virus, even before Omikron appeared.

And children under five are still not vaccinated. They are filling hospitals all over the world more and more. Over the past month, admissions to New York City Pediatric Units have increased fivefold. Across the United States, hospitalization of children in the last week increased by 48%.
– These kids need oxygen. They need other support. Even if they are only dehydrated, they need intravenous fluids, but most of those COVID-19 babies we take have difficulty breathing, says Dr. Stanley Spinner, director of Texas Children’s Pediatrics & Urgent Care in Houston.
COVID-19 in children is not always mild
Polish specialists also say that children are now suffering from COVID-19 much more seriously than before.
– It is not true that all children are infected with the coronavirus is mild. Some get infected really hard. We see it especially now, during the fourth wave. We cannot forget about acute complications. I am talking about PIMS, which is a direct threat to life. On average, one in every thousand children has it. I also mean long-term symptoms that may occur after COVID-19 – long-lasting changes in the lungs, weakness, poor exercise tolerance, neurological changes, exacerbation of chronic diseases. Will they appear – it is an individual matter – said Lidia Stopyra in an interview with Medonet.
- Journalists revealed the forecast of the next wave of COVID-19 in Poland. »2,3 thousand. deaths daily »
– We must be aware of a fairly large number of hospitalized children, especially in the Delta variant, which so far reigns in the world, and also in Poland – said Dr. Michał Sutkowski, president of Warsaw Family Physicians in an interview with PAP
– It is worth vaccinating children, because it is not true that children always have COVID-19 mildly – emphasized the expert.
