In Bergamo, in the north of Italy, the information that, for the first time since the beginning of the epidemic, no other case of coronavirus had been recorded in the last day, was relieved. For several months, the city was one of the epicenters of the spread of the virus.

The COVID-19 pandemic in Bergamo

Since February, when SARS-CoV-2 attacked the city with enormous force, a record number of new cases was recorded in the following weeks. This province has become one of the most affected zones in the world by the coronavirus.

Between mid-March and mid-April, hundreds of new infections and soaring deaths were reported daily there. The peak hit on March 23, when 251 people died in Bergamo and 715 more infections were detected. There, too, a record was set: serological tests showed that 57 percent of residents had been in contact with the virus.

Bergamo is recovering from the pandemic

Recently, the epidemiological situation began to improve, and in July, a local hospital announced that there were no more COVID-19 patients in the intensive care unit there. The second major day in the history of the epidemic in Bergamo was Saturday, when the local medical services announced that no further infection had been detected. This happened when over XNUMX new cases were detected in Italy; the most since May.

In Bergamo, the utmost vigilance is exercised, especially with regard to those arriving from abroad, including Italian tourists returning from holidays from risk countries.

Many of them land at the nearby Orio al Serio airport. These people are examined at a medical point organized at the fairgrounds.

The editorial board recommends:

  1. WHO chief: we hope the pandemic will end in two years
  2. Increase in SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infections in Germany. This may be due to increased testing
  3. We will not be infected with COVID-19 repeatedly. Thanks to T-type memory lymphocytes, we will gain long-term immunity
