IKEA: everything for home and office

In September, IKEA celebrates its 10th anniversary in Russia. What was, what is and what awaits buyers in 2010.

Ikea company

The founder of the company, the son of a farmer, Ingvar Kamprad, began his career at the age of 17, he traveled around the outskirts of Småland (a town in southern Sweden) selling ballpoint pens, Christmas cards and seeds.

But five years later, the first piece of furniture appeared in the assortment of his company – Ruth’s chair.

And the name of the company, which was born in the distant 1940s, is made up of the initials of its founder and the first letters of the name of the area where he lived – Ingvar Kamprad, Elmtaryud (farm), Agunnaryud (parish in Småland).

The main rules of shopping at IKEA

Everything for home and office

  • Touch with your hands! The IKEA store is a huge furniture exhibition. All furniture can be tested – lie down on the bed, sit on the sofa, let the child choose the most comfortable chair for himself. And only after that decide to buy.
  • Write everything down! In order not to get lost in the variety of goods, write down the name of the item, article number and place in the warehouse. For this, pencils, IKEA guidebooks with a note sheet and paper centimeters are always at the ready in the hall. And also consultants who are ready to answer all your questions.
  • All by yourself. With a shopping list, you go to the Self-Service Warehouse and pick up the goods in a convenient flat package. Take it home yourself, assemble it yourself – and enjoy the purchase on the day of purchase!
  • It’s never too late to change your mind… If the item you bought at IKEA did not suit you, you can exchange it or return it within 60 days from the date of purchase – with a receipt and in its original packaging. In addition, in IKEA stores there is an action “Test your senses”: you have as long as 90 days (!) To thoroughly test the mattress. If you find it too hard or too soft, just bring it back (don’t forget your receipt!).
  • You choose and the children play… Every IKEA store has a playroom where your child can enjoy more fun activities while you shop.
  • An empty belly is deaf to shopping. It is difficult to decide on anything on an empty stomach. In all IKEA stores you will find a cozy cafe where you can taste Swedish cuisine at surprisingly low prices: soup of the day – 29 rubles, already famous meatballs with rice, creamy sauce and lingonberry jam – only 99 rubles.
  • How low prices are created at IKEA

    • First there was a price tag. Before the designers start developing the appearance of the item, the lowest possible price for the future product is set. And the designer must show imagination so that the future item does not cost more.
    • Flat packing. IKEA designers design items to fit in flat packaging – this saves space in the warehouse and in your car and reduces the price of the product.
    • Self-service warehouse. There was a time when there was no self-service warehouse in IKEA stores. Furniture was handed out to customers after the purchase was paid. But one day the line became so long that the employees decided to let all the customers into the warehouse so that everyone could find and pick up their purchase himself.
    • Savings on transportation. Buying goods at IKEA, you do not need to pay for delivery, you can easily transport purchases yourself: thanks to flat packaging, most IKEA products can easily fit into a regular car.
    • Savings on assembly. Most products are designed so that you can assemble them yourself. If you prefer to use the services of professionals, IKEA specialists will assemble your furniture for a reasonable fee.
