Ibum is a popular over-the-counter pain reliever. It is used for pain of varying severity. How fast does Ibum work? What’s in the composition? Can Ibum be given to children? We check what is worth knowing about Ibum.

Ibum – action

Ibum has a broad analgesic effect thanks to the composition of ibuprofen, which is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. There are at least several types of Ibum with different doses of the active ingredient. Ibum for children is also available on the pharmaceutical market.

Worth knowing

Most often in pharmacies you can buy green-colored Ibum tablets, which are tightly filled with the solution. They have a smooth surface that makes them easy to swallow.

Ibum – drug forms and their composition

The classic Ibum on the pharmaceutical market is available in three forms:

  1. Ibum capsules – one capsule contains 100 mg of ibuprofen, and the excipients are macrogol 400 and potassium hydroxide 50%. The capsule shell is gelatin, partially dehydrated liquid sorbitol, purified water, quinoline yellow (E 104) and patent blue (E 131); 
  2. Ibum oral suspension – 5 ml of suspension contain 100 mg of ibuprofen. In addition, the composition of the drug includes liquid maltitol, glycerol, xanthan gum, sodium saccharin, sodium benzoate, fumaric acid, disodium phosphate dodecahydrate, raspberry flavor and purified water; 
  3. Ibum Gel – 1 g of gel contains 50 mg of ibuprofen and 30 mg of levomenthol. The excipients included 96% ethanol, propylene glycol, polysorbate 20, carbomer EZ-2, aminomethylpropanol and purified water. 

Ibum – types

In addition to the kalsal version of the drug Ibum, we also find:

  1. Strong Ibum – a soft capsule contains 400 mg of ibuporfen, and in 5 ml of oral suspension – 200 mg of ibuprofen; 
  2. Ibum Forte Pure – 5 ml of oral suspension contains 200 mg of ibuprofen; 
  3. Ibum Comfort Minicaps – one capsule contains 200 mg of ibuprofen; 
  4. Ibum for children – one suppository contains 60 mg of ibuprofen; 
  5. Ibum Easy – one sachet of oral powder contains 200 mg of ibuprofen; 
  6. Ibum Easy Forte – one sachet of oral powder contains 400 mg of ibuprofen; 
  7. Ibum Forte Junior – one sachet of oral powder contains 100 mg of ibuprofen; 
  8. Ibum Express – one capsule contains 400 mg of ibuprofen; 
  9. I’m going to be a woman – one capsule contains 200 mg of ibuprofen; 
  10. Mother Grip – one capsule contains 200 mg of ibuprofen and 30 mg of pseudoephedrine hydrochloride; 
  11. Ibum Supermax – one capsule contains 600 mg of ibuprofen; 
  12. Ibum of the Gulf – one capsule contains 200 mg of ibuprofen and 30 mg of pseudoephedrine hydrochloride; 
  13. Ibum of the Gulf Max – one tablet contains 400 mg of ibuprofen and 60 mg of pseudoephedrine hydrochloride. 

Ibum – indications for use

Ibum in the form of a gel, soft capsule or oral suspension is most commonly used to treat mild to moderate pain:

  1. Sore throat; 
  2. Muscle aches; 
  3. Arthralgia; 
  4. Toothache; 
  5. Pain after dental procedures; 
  6. Postoperative pain; 
  7. Ear pain. 

Ibum in capsules and in the form of an oral suspension also has an antipyretic effect, so it can be used during the flu or colds. On the other hand, the gel is effective in minimizing the symptoms of neuralgia or sports injuries.

How to use Ibum gel?

Ibum gel should be used according to the doctor’s instructions or the information provided in the medicine leaflet. For both children and adults, apply 5 to 12 cm of gel to the sore spot three times a day. The gel cannot be used more often than every four hours and for more than two weeks. Avoid getting the gel in your eyes.

Dosage of Ibum capsules

As with the gel and oral suspension, Ibum soft capsules should be dosed according to the doctor’s prescription or the information provided in the package leaflet. The recommended starting dose for adults and children over 12 years of age should be 1-2 capsules every 4-6 hours. The daily dose should not exceed 6 capsules. If pain symptoms do not pass within three days, consult your doctor.

Ibum Oral Suspension – Dosing Details

A measuring cup, a measuring spoon or stopper, and an oral syringe are provided with the Ibum oral suspension pack. The details of its dosage are strictly dependent on body weight and are as follows:

  1. 3-6 months (5-7,6 kg) – a single dose is 2,5 ml. The daily dose is 3 times 2,5 ml; 
  2. 6-12 months (7,7-9 kg) – a single dose is 2,5 ml, and the daily dose should not exceed 3 ml 4-2,5 times; 
  3. 1-3 years (10-15 kg) – a single dose is 5 ml, and the daily dose should not exceed 3 times 5 ml; 
  4. 4-6 years (16-20 kg) – a single dose is 7,5 ml, and the daily dose should not exceed 3 times 7,5 ml; 
  5. 7-9 years (21-29 kg) – a single dose is 10 ml, and the daily dose should not exceed 3 ml 10 times; 
  6. 10-12 years (30-40 kg) – a single dose is 15 ml, and the daily dose should not exceed 3 times 15 ml; 
  7. Over 40 kg – a single dose is 1520 ml, and a daily dose of 3 ml 4-15 times. 

Ibum – contraindications to use

The main contraindication to the use of Ibum is hypersensitivity to any of the active or excipients. The oral suspension and soft capsules must not be dosed in patients who:

  1. They are allergic to ibuprofen; 
  2. They have gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer; 
  3. They are treated with acetylsalicylic acid or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs; 
  4. They have severe heart, liver or kidney failure; 
  5. They have blood clotting disorders, hemorrhagic diathesis, bleeding in the brain. 

Ibum gel must not be used on open wounds or in the event of a rash at the application site.

Ibum – recommended precautions

Particular precautions apply mainly to the use of Ibum soft capsules and oral sachets. Care should be taken when taking the preparation together with other analgesics or acetylsalicylic acid, the daily dose of which exceeds 75 mg, and in the case of certain skin diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus.

The recommended precautions also apply to patients suffering from chronic diseases of the stomach and intestines (e.g. Crohn’s disease), hypertension, renal and hepatic dysfunction, and asthma.

Long-term use of Ibum may increase the risk of stroke, so do not take more than the recommended dose. In addition, Ibum cannot be administered with chickenpox.

Ibum – side effects of use

When using Ibum gel, the main side effects may be:

  1. Immune system disorders – hypersensitivity; 
  2. Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders – swelling, rash, itching, 
  3. Respiratory disorders – asthma 

The use of the oral suspension and soft capsules may be associated with:

  1. Gastritis; 
  2. Headache and dizziness; 
  3. Stomach ulcers; 
  4. Blurred vision; 
  5. Nausea and vomiting; 
  6. Flatulence; 
  7. Diarrhea.

If your children experience severe abdominal pain, bloody vomiting, black stools, or an allergic reaction after receiving Ibum oral suspension, see a doctor immediately.

Ibum and other drugs

Ibuprofen contained in the composition of Ibum may react with other drugs, in particular:

  1. Corticosteroids – the risk of developing gastric or duodenal ulcers increases; 
  2. Anticoagulants (e.g., acetylsalicylic acid); 
  3. Antihypertensive drugs (e.g. ACE inhibitors); 
  4. Lithium for the treatment of depression; 
  5. Methotrexate; 
  6. Tacrolimus; 
  7. Cyclosporin; 
  8. Zidovudine; 
  9. Digitalis glycosides and phenytoin; 
  10. Quinol antibiotics; 
  11. Cholestyramine; 
  12. Voriconazole and fluconazole; 
  13. Sulfonylurea derivatives; 
  14. Drugs for high blood pressure; 
  15. Diuretics. 

Ibum and overdose

There is a risk of overdosing with Ibum, manifested by nystagmus, dizziness, vomiting or stomach pains. If you observe them, see a doctor. Symptomatic treatment is most often used in the case of an overdose of Ibum.

Can Ibum be taken during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

Ibum oral suspension should not be taken during pregnancy due to the high risk of complications. Ibuprofen may pass into breast milk, therefore the use of either the suspension, capsules or gel is not recommended in breastfeeding women. The dosage of tablets and gel is also not recommended during pregnancy.

How do I store Ibum?

Ibum should be kept out of the reach and sight of children. It is best to choose a room with a maximum of 25 degrees C. After the expiry date, the drug must not be taken.

Ibum is an over-the-counter medicine that can be purchased at a pharmacy or online. We will pay about PLN 30 for 12 Ibum capsules. The oral suspension costs about PLN 17, and the Ibum gel – about PLN 16.
