I have a friend, we have not spilled water since early childhood. We studied together at school, after graduating from secondary education we managed not to get lost and continue to communicate. We even found a common hobby, chose the right university and entered the same specialty.
Youth, like many in his student years, was cheerful. We went in for sports, went to discos and visited friends. More precisely, they went to neighboring rooms, because they lived in a hostel at the university.
Our favorite pastime has always been songs with a guitar. The girls often brought delicious cakes, homemade cookies, so they liked to drink tea. Alcohol was treated neutrally, I personally did not perceive it at all.
Story from our subscriber Yuri.
Why I decided to make alcohol myself
After graduating from university, my friend and I got a job in the same company. Until we started families, there was a lot of free time. As soon as there was a lunch break at work or the boss let us go, we went to dinner at my house.
I lived in a private house, and mountain ash grew in our yard. Since childhood, she has attracted attention with red clusters in the autumn. Since childhood, I remember how my father often made wine from rowan berries.
When once again they let us go home from work before dark, we went into the fence and saw huge red rowan berries. I immediately felt like I was in my childhood. I remembered about my father and wine. That’s why we got the idea: “Why not make wine yourself?”.
What ingredients are required
For a long time my friend and I tortured my father, but finally he gave in and told us everything that is necessary for making mountain ash wine. At that time, I was sure that everything would work out perfectly and without problems.
My father constantly said that in making wine, the main thing is simplicity. And the ingredients were the simplest, which are present in everyone’s house. They turned out to be: mountain ash, water and sugar. Well, it couldn’t be easier, we thought.
According to the recipe, as my father told us, it was necessary to take – 5 kg of red rowan berries, 2 liters of water, and 1 kg of sugar.
Ingredients | batching |
Red rowan berries | 5 kg |
Water | 2 l |
Sugar | 1 kg |
The cooking process
We took, therefore, a large glass jar. Previously, the rowan berries were put in the freezer for 2 hours, and then they waited until the berry completely melted to release the juice, and set to work.
According to my father, this was the easiest recipe, even easier than frying potatoes.
We crushed these berries with a manual meat grinder, it was difficult, but we managed. Porridge from berry puree rubbed through gauze. The pulp that we had left was diluted with hot water, it turned out to be a slurry that looked like juice.
Then we waited for the juice to cool down. We added juice, which we got when squeezing through gauze, plus added more sugar to this composition. Then it was all poured into a glass container, gauze was put on the neck of the bottle so that debris or dust would not get in, and put away in a warm, dark place for 3 days.

After work, after 3 days, we came to my house, it was important to strain the wine, which had begun to ferment. Strain the pieces, remove all the thick and leave only the liquid part.
After that, we added the rest of the sugar and carefully put a glove on the neck so that the fermentation process of rowan wine was visible. Then the container was removed in a cool dark place for 4-6 weeks. We put it in the cellar and, of course, forgot about it.

What was the result
It so happened that my friend had to leave for a few months in another city for work. I worked, helped my parents, went about my business. No one has ever mentioned rowan wine.
And now 3 months have passed, a friend returned from a business trip. Met him with his parents. We sat and talked, and suddenly the father asked: “Do you remember, you asked for the recipe for rowan wine, did it work out?”
And here we fell into that same wine sediment – but we forgot about it! Of course, I rushed into the cellar like a bullet. Well, I think everything is gone before it even starts. We told my father everything, and he said: “Pour it up.”
My friend and I looked at each other, poured wine for my father and froze. Father drank a glass, grunted and praised us. “You have a real wine, even better than mine.” We were shocked, of course. And indeed, the wine turned out to be such that it is indistinguishable from the purchased one.
Have you had a similar case? Have you ever forgotten and remembered in time about the playing wine?
