Is fatigue a symptom of diseases? What might the lack of strength to act indicate? Can a feeling of lack of strength be a symptom of a deficiency of specific nutrients? Is it worth performing any additional diagnostic tests? The question is answered by the drug. Katarzyna Darecka.

Is lack of strength a symptom of disease?

I am 29 years old and for several months I have been struggling with the fact that I have no strength for anything. It is accompanied by a feeling of breakdown, difficulty concentrating and fatigue. Apart from the fact that I do not have the strength for anything, I am still sleepy, I could sleep all the time or lie in bed because I do not have the strength or motivation to do it. I don’t feel that it has an emotional background, like stress or depression, because I’ve never had such problems. I have the impression that the fact that I have no strength for anything is a health problem. Could the fact that I have the strength for nothing be a symptom of a disease?

Or maybe this feeling is the result of some deficiencies? I heard that among other things vitamin D deficiency it can manifest like this, but I took some supplements and it didn’t help – I still don’t have the strength for anything. I am asking for advice, especially on what may be the cause of my problems and what I could do so that I do not feel like I do not have the strength for anything at all. Maybe I should do some diagnostic tests right away to check my health? I am worried that something is wrong with me, on the other hand, the fact that I have no strength for anything makes my life difficult and I would like to fight it somehow.

The doctor explains the causes of constant fatigue

Feeling of chronic fatigue it may be a symptom of a disease, but before we start looking for them, it is worth considering whether our lifestyle is conducive to our feeling sleepy and unmotivated. These causes may include alcohol or drug abuse, too much or no physical activity, difficulty falling asleep, waking up at night, using certain medications, such as antihistamines, antitussives, unhealthy eating habits, stress at work or at home.

However, if we have nothing to complain about in terms of lifestyle, and the feeling of fatigue persists, go to your family doctor. He will be able to conduct a detailed interview, inquire about various aspects of life, as well as examine and, on this basis, order tests that will help in establishing the diagnosis.

Diseases that may be manifested by fatigue include: anemia, depression mentioned in the question, anxiety syndromes, chronic inflammation or infection, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, inflammatory bowel diseases including Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, obesity, obstructive sleep apnea, fibromyalgia, acute liver failure, chronic fatigue syndrome.

If, in addition to the feeling of fatigue, other symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, uneven heartbeat, fainting or presyncope, very severe headache, severe abdominal pain, abdominal pain, rectal bleeding or bloody vomiting appear, URGENTLY come to the nearest Hospital Emergency Department.

I do not recommend doing laboratory tests on your own – there are many causes of fatigue, and testing for every possible cause is pointless. Each doctor assumes that he is treating the patient, not the result, therefore, after conducting a medical history and physical examination, the Family Doctor is able to order the most appropriate tests for a given patient. Only on the basis of the results, the doctor will be able to initiate causal treatment or, if the situation requires it, to deepen the diagnosis or refer it to a specialist.
