“I gave birth unexpectedly” Three mothers recount their experience

Leslie, mother of Léonie, 7 years old, and Zélie, 5 years old.

“The neighbor thought I was doing incantations.”

“For my oldest child, although the birth was wonderful, I felt like I was missing something. I gave birth four days after the term (after a detachment of the membranes). It was quite painful and intrusive. The epidural was put in very quickly. I didn’t feel anything. I could strum on my phone during contractions. So, for the second, I wanted to try a more natural route. I chose a different maternity unit that offered birth preparation without an epidural. I did prenatal singing. But also acupuncture so as not to relive the same situation. A week before the term, during a session with my midwife, I saw myself giving birth in the water. It was an incredible feeling …

Suddenly, I said to Gaël: “We’re not going anywhere! ”

The next morning, I started to feel light contractions. My husband, Gaël, was working. My daughter Léonie was at the nursery. I took a little Spasfon®, a shower to relax me. Around 13 p.m., I warned Gaël anyway. “It’s good if you come back to the apartment”. I put into practice what I had learned, to breathe, to emit serious sounds. Later, the neighbor confessed to me that she thought I was doing incantations! At 18 p.m., Gaël came back with Léonie. They made a cake. Then we decided to give it to neighbors to get started. But I felt a little water flowing. Then very quickly, I had a sudden urge to push. There was no question to ask, it was so powerful! I said to Gaël: “We’re not going anywhere! I lay down on our bed in a T-shirt. He called the fire department. “Take out the towels, we’re coming!” I pushed once, the head came out. The baby was a little blue, it was impressive, but Gaël dared to look. On the second contraction, I pushed and the baby came out. Gaël grabbed him, the cord made him like suspenders. He put Zelie on me. We were more than worried.

This experience gave me great self-confidence

Then the firefighters arrived. A doctor and a nurse followed. They cut the cord. The rescue took place in the fire engine. The three days in the maternity ward had a strange taste. I didn’t know why I was there. I was fishing. In any case, the bond with Zélie was very powerful from the start. And this experience gave me a lot of strength and self-confidence. Some relatives told me that I had put myself in danger, but I did not have this will. Perhaps giving birth at home was an unconscious desire. After Zélie was born, I changed my career. From project manager in the audiovisual sector, I became a childcare assistant in PMI, and I also work as a doula to support couples during birth. “the

“My son was holding my hand.”

Caroline

Mother of Raïko, 6 years old, and Neïla, 3 years old

My first childbirth was started and very medicalized. For the second, I wanted to avoid the “epidural, endless wait and compulsory episiotomy” scheme. I therefore opted for a more physiological preparation for childbirth, with an external midwife at home. The scheduled date was February 25. On the 17th, I had an acupuncture session. On the morning of the 18th, I didn’t feel anything special, no warning signs, it was the start of the school holidays. I took Raïko, who was 3, to go shopping.

I suffered from biting myself

In the garden store, pushing my cart full of flowers, I felt a very strong first contraction. A gentleman worried about my condition but I reassured him. At the time of checkout, I was missing the mark. I told my son “we’re not going to the supermarket, we’re coming home”, and I texted my partner to let him know. He replied: “Call my mother to come and help you and I will join you”. His work is an hour away. I managed to drive safely (fortunately only 5 minutes). When I got home, I sat on my pregnancy ball. I was in pain biting myself. Besides, I kept a nice mark on my hand for several days! I forced myself not to scream so as not to frighten Raiko. He remained glued to me, he took me in his arms, he held my hand. He is always very cuddly.

My son witnessed the whole scene

After 10 minutes, my mother-in-law, Evelyne, arrived. She took my bag for the maternity ward but I couldn’t get up. So she rang the bell for the neighbor to help escort me to the car. But I sent the poor man for a walk, whom I didn’t want to see at all at that time! Then, I felt that the pocket of waters was broken. The pain became less intense. Evelyne had the time to tell me something like “Don’t do that to me Caro!” », But she kept her calm, I felt that Raïko was safe with her. She called my parents who advised to call the Samu who called the fire department. On the phone, they asked “Do you feel like pushing?” “. I didn’t really have a choice, I could already feel my baby’s head. I was on all fours. My mother-in-law found towels in the bathroom. A second very strong contraction, and I found myself with my daughter in my arms! My parents followed everything live on the phone. And my son was sitting on the stairs near the entrance to the living room, he saw the whole scene. He was not afraid. In the sense that it was a natural event. But for a while, he didn’t want to talk to pregnant women anymore… Ten minutes later, the firefighters arrived. They checked that everything was ok, cut the cord and took me to the maternity ward. Evelyne called the dad: “Everything’s fine, it’s a girl. “I still had a lot of stitches because my daughter came, according to the midwives, like a” cannon ball “. When we look at our living room, it’s very strange. The carpet and sofa are spotless and we have since explained to our daughter “You were born here, right here”. For me, this childbirth is a dream come true. ” the

“If we sell the car, we’ll keep the seat our son was born in.”

Christelle

Mum of Zachary, 7, Kylian, 5, and Wyatt, 3.

“For my second child, the time between arriving at the maternity hospital and giving birth had already shortened. But from there to imagine the scenario for number three this Sunday… Fifteen days before the scheduled date, I lost the mucous plug and I started to have painless contractions. At the end of the afternoon, we decided to go to the maternity ward to take stock. The two grown-ups stayed with their grandparents after lunch. From 20 p.m. to 21 p.m., I remained under monitoring. False work. The medical team sent me home. We still had a 35-minute drive. In my opinion, the vibrations of the car made the work easier. We stopped to eat at a fast food restaurant, convinced that it wouldn’t be for tonight. At home, the contractions continued, I had difficulty moving to take a bath and put on my clothes. My husband, Damien, even started to shave. I felt that everything was accelerating so I yelled at him: “We must go back, now is not the time!” I couldn’t find a comfortable position in the car. We stretched out the front seat. I was very clear with Damien: he had to concentrate on the road, only on the road. I preferred to fend for myself rather than risk an accident in the fast lane. I forbade him to exceed the speed limit, even if at the end of the country roads, I think he pressed the mushroom a little. I stomped my feet on the floor of the car to take the pain. I clutched at the handle at the top of the door. I turned on one side, then the other. All this with my seat belt! Until I decided to take it off and get on all fours, forehead on the headrest, elbows on the backrest. I did not undress. I believed until the end that we would arrive on time!

The noise of an exploding traffic jam

At the last roundabout before arriving at the maternity ward, 50 meters from the emergency room, I lost my water during a violent contraction. I remember the very special sound, like the cork of an exploding bottle. I pushed without wanting to. My baby slipped on his own, he fell on the seat. His fall was cushioned by my sarouel completely soaked. There followed a moment of panic: “He went out!” “” Can you smell your head? “,” No he fell! It was dark, we could hardly make out the baby’s head. Then we covered it with a fleece blanket that we always have on the back, it was winter. The dad came to the emergency room to ask for help “My wife gave birth in the car”. I wanted to walk up to the stretcher, with my baby in my arms, I was in a daze, proud, shaken, moved. I was hovering. My husband always says to me “We will never sell the car, or we will remove the front seat!” ” the
