My little Loane was born on May 26, 2010 in our vehicle, in the parking lot of a café. A childbirth along a national road, in the middle of rush hour! All in the pouring rain …
It was my second pregnancy and I was 9 days from the term. My collar was open with two fingers. The night before the birth, I was woken up shortly after 1 a.m. due to heavy thunderstorms. I slept very badly, but only felt a small twitch for less than a minute.
I got up at 6 a.m. and took a shower. We were on our way to breakfast with my husband and daughter when I felt something crack inside me. I rushed to the bathroom and lost my water. It was then 7:25 a.m. We left as quickly as possible. We dropped off our eldest child with my parents, informed on the way by my husband. It was 7:45 am and we were about 1 km from my parents’ house when I realized what was happening to me: my baby was going to be born in the car!
A construction car as a delivery room
My husband’s construction car: no heating, dust, plaster. Fear had invaded me, I no longer mastered anything. He knew how to keep his cool and calm, despite my great feeling of helplessness. He immediately called the SAMU, they told him to walk 200 meters and park in the parking lot of a cafe along the road.
At that point, I couldn’t sit down anymore, I was standing in the car (a saxophone!). The firefighters arrived 8 minutes later. They just had time to open the passenger side door and I pivot as the little one came up on the wheel caps. She slipped from the firefighter’s wet hands, and she fell to the ground on the gravel.
Luckily it all ended well, she got away with a small scratch on her head. We had to cover the car to prevent water from entering as much as possible. The journey to the maternity ward was long: heavy traffic and very bad weather on the highway. We had the fear of our life. I remember everything, second by second… And tomorrow my baby will already be 6 months old!
