Is there a link between hypothyroidism and weight gain? Can this disease trigger weight gain? What diet should I follow for hypothyroidism? The question is answered by the drug. Paweł Żmuda-Trzebiatowski.

Can hypothyroidism cause weight gain?

Hello and welcome. Thank you for the consultation. I am writing to you about my friend who has recently gained a lot of weight. During the interviews, she explains that it is the fault of hypothyroidism. However, I find it a little hard to believe. She was never particularly obese, but always had a few, as they say, extra pounds, and she was unlikely to limit herself to sweet pleasures. I don’t know much about medicine, health topics are a shame to admit, they are also alien to me.

Czy Hypothyroidismthat my friend says can actually cause weight gain? My friend gained about 8-9 kg in the last six months. If this is true, what is your hypothyroidism diet? I would like to help my friend and maybe suggest her to change something in her menu. I noticed that he eats the same products as before, and maybe even a little more. She also mentioned that the hypothyroidism mentioned above can be treated with hormones. However, will her body weight not increase even more after such treatment?

Best regards and thank you for your answer. Sandra from Świdnik.

Your doctor explains the connection between hypothyroidism and weight gain

Madam, hypothyroidism can certainly cause weight gain. Thyroid hormones – thyroxine and triiodothyronine are responsible for regulating the metabolism of the whole organism. Their deficiency, which is observed in the case of hypothyroidism, slows down the metabolism. One of the symptoms is just that weight gainespecially when the amount of calories consumed per day is not being reduced. Eating a healthy diet rich in vegetables and fruit and low in red meat and animal fats is most appropriate for hypothyroidism, but is unlikely to be enough to normalize your weight.

In the case of hypothyroidism, the most important thing is regulating the concentration of thyroid hormones. It is important because their deficiency affects not only body weight but also a number of other processes. In addition to weight gain, the symptoms of hypothyroidism include drowsiness, fatigue, feeling cold, depressive disorders, drop in blood pressure and heart rate, dry skin, and brittle hair. The severity of symptoms depends mainly on the level of thyroid hormones in the blood.

Treatment of hypothyroidism consists in the daily supplementation of synthetic thyroid hormones, especially levothyroxine. In many cases, the drug should be used every day for the rest of its life.

  1. To take care of your thyroid, reach for EutroHerbs Thyroid – a herbal mixture available at a favorable price on Medonet Market.

It should be borne in mind that significant hypothyroidism can cause infertility, and if it occurs in pregnant women and is left untreated, it can cause various defects in the fetus, including mental retardation.

As you can see, it is definitely worth persuading a friend to change her eating habits, especially if they are incorrect, but above all, hormone levels should be balanced. After that, the weight should begin to normalize. If it doesn’t, there are other causes that may be worth considering, including polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which can have symptoms similar to hypothyroidism.
