Hypoallergenic cosmetics: what is it, how to choose
Many people think that such funds should be with a special formula that does not cause itching, but not everything is so simple.
Believe it or not, every second adult has an allergy. And even if you are not bursting into tears during flowering, then you certainly sneeze from dust while cleaning or find redness after using a new powder.
Allergies can be either congenital or acquired. After all, all residents of megacities inhale exhaust gases and eat unhealthy foods. Therefore, those who have ever encountered allergies have heard the term “hypoallergenic”. It is especially often used in the beauty industry: irritated skin and itching – try a hypoallergenic cream, tears flow from mascara – find a hypoallergenic one.
However, even in the composition of such products there may be chemicals and irritants, from which the allergic reaction can be even greater. In addition, American scientists argue that the term “hypoallergens” is not legal, and there are no special standards that govern the rules for using this word.
Before the start of sales, each cosmetic product must undergo a special test for sensitivity and the possibility of allergic reactions or contact dermatitis. If the funds have passed the test, then it can automatically be labeled “hypoallergenic”.
The implication is that there is no list of ingredients that cause the most allergies either. There are only well-known ingredients that most often cause itching and irritation – these include:
· Preservatives (parabens, organic acids, formaldehyde compounds);
· Fragrances (may be indicated on the label as Parfume);
· Dyes;
Some essential oils.
Therefore, the buyer should read the labels of all creams, serums and other products more carefully in order to check for himself whether there are ingredients in the composition that may cause a negative reaction to the skin.
Dermatologists and cosmetics creators claim that if a cosmetic product is labeled “hypoallergenic”, it means that the product is less prone to allergies, irritation and itching.
“When choosing cosmetics, one should understand that there are no absolutely hypoallergenic agents, since an allergy can be anything and you can never guess with it. It is for this reason that it is best to do the test of each product yourself, in order to understand for sure that it will not cause a negative reaction, ”advises Natalya Pavlenkova, dermatologist at Aldo Coppola Seasons.
How do you know if you have an allergic reaction?
Allergy to cosmetics does not always appear immediately, sometimes several days must pass between exposure to the skin and the appearance of a rash. Most often, allergy manifests itself in the form of itching, swelling, inflammatory elements, nasal congestion, itching of the throat are also possible. It should be understood that even a short-term exposure can cause irritation that will last up to several months.
“It is worth considering the fact that redness and peeling can be caused not only by an allergic reaction, but also by poor or improper skin care,” explains Natalia Pavlenkova.
Therefore, it is best to consult a dermatologist or select care in conjunction with a beautician who will take into account the condition of your skin.
