Hypnotherapy helps people with irritable bowel syndrome and should be more widely used in their treatment, says a British scientist.
Dr. Roland Valori of the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital is convinced of the effectiveness of hypnosis in relieving the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (eg abdominal pain, flatulence and constipation). The benefits of such therapy were shown by scientific research already in the 80s. Dr. Valori himself has been using it for over 20 years.
According to BBC News, Dr. Valori recently analyzed 100 of his patients and found that hypnotherapy helped nine out of 10 people.
According to the researcher, the effectiveness of hypnosis is probably due to its relaxing effect. It is useful, among others because the symptoms associated with irritable bowel syndrome often make life difficult for patients and put them in embarrassing situations. The relaxation that hypnosis brings allows patients to cope better with this stress.
Since hypnosis is such an effective treatment for intestinal ailments, why is it not widely used? Perhaps, as Dr. Valori suspects, doctors simply do not believe in its operation (PAP)
