Hyperlordosis (deep lordosis, concave back) is a posture defect that manifests itself in excessive forward bending of the spine in the lower back – in the lumbar part of the spine. The natural condition is a slight forward bend of the spine in the cervical, lumbar, thoracic and sacral parts – thanks to this, it is possible to maintain the load on the head and absorb shocks. Hyperlordosis occurs when its lumbar portion is excessively curved.
Hyperlordosis – causes
There are several factors that can contribute to the development of overuse lumbar lordosis:
- birth defect,
- wrong body posture,
- lack of physical activity,
- obesity,
- deepened cliff (too much curvature of the middle part of the back towards the outside),
- injuries,
- muscular dystrophy,
- rickets,
- osteoporosis,
- inflammation of the intervertebral discs,
- degenerative diseases of the spine,
- sciatica,
- achondroplasia (cause of dwarfism),
- spondylolisthesis,
- tuberculous complication.
Hyperlordosis – symptoms
Characteristic for hyperlordosis are:
- concave back,
- protruding belly,
- domed buttocks.

In order to diagnosing hyperlordosis you can do a simple test (by yourself) – you should put your back on a hard surface, and then put your hand under the lower part of the spine (above the buttocks).
