Hannah’s dad, an explorer of the seas and oceans, went sailing for several months. Hannah with her mother, a fat red cat Charlie and a real giraffe were left waiting for him at home, in a small town on the Baltic Sea. There is no phone or Internet on her father’s ship, so the girl acts the old fashioned way: she writes letters, hides them in a bottle and throws them into the sea. These letters contain stories about mother and school, about various fictions and fantasies. Not all fathers who leave go to sea. But any child growing up without a dad will resonate with Hannah’s desire to keep in touch with a loved one who is far away. Published in 2005 in Austria, the story received a state award for children’s literature.
