How veneers change a smile: 20 before and after photos

Whom they are ideal for, and for whom they are strictly contraindicated.

Veneers – ceramic “onlays” for teeth – allow you to find a Hollywood smile in a short time.

True, this pleasure is not cheap. Yes, and there are many fears among patients who come to the dentist. We figure it out together with a professional doctor: are veneers really safe and does every girl need them?

A veneer is a thin ceramic plate, an onlay on a tooth, “artificial enamel” of a tooth. Yes, some types of ceramics are very similar in properties to tooth enamel. This fact played a decisive role in the choice of material for the manufacture of veneers. Hence one of the comparisons – artificial enamel.

As with any ceramic, a single veneer is a fragile structure. It gains strength after gluing to the base – the tooth. I would like to draw your attention to the fact that gluing the veneer is one of the important stages, and it is not just pouring cement into the veneer and sticking it to the tooth, but rather painstaking manipulation in several stages.

Most often, veneers are used in the following situations:

  • Color defects: staining due to the use of drugs, surface staining with the penetration of various dyes into tissues (tea, coffee, smoking), fluorosis, age-related changes.

  • Defects in shape and structure: cracks, chips, atypical tooth shapes, abrasion, erosion, crown fractures, mechanical or chemical abrasion, size correction.

  • Location defects: diastema, correction of minor anomalies such as rotation, change in the angle of inclination.

When are veneers contraindicated?

  • If more than 50% of the enamel is lost during the preparation, it is preferable to place a metal-free ceramic crown.

  • With occlusion defects: deep bite, lack of teeth in the chewing section, bruxism, too small a crown of the tooth, etc. All this can lead to damage to the veneer.

  • With poor oral hygiene.

Veneers have many advantages from a dentist’s point of view. Firstly, it is a method of restoration of teeth that minimally affects hard and soft tissues.

Secondly, the ability to accurately simulate the structure, color, light transmission and light reflection of the veneer makes it as similar to natural teeth as possible. That is, an excellent aesthetic result is achieved. Add to this the ability to quickly simulate the patient’s smile and the absence of soft tissue (gum) irritation.

Veneers can be placed with or without overlapping the incisal edge, with or without lateral preparation. The choice of the final method depends on the patient’s bite and the condition of the teeth.
