Silicone grease is an indispensable material in construction and economy, industry and mechanical engineering. Popularly known as a sealant. In its structure, it is a solid substance that firmly adheres to the material. And if silicone gets on the same clothes or piece of furniture, then it will be problematic to get rid of it.
We have prepared for you ways to remove silicone grease stains from various surfaces and materials.
Prepare
Silicone grease stains are among the most difficult to remove. Therefore, preparation for their removal will take time and “tools”. You will need:
Alcohol;
Acetic acid;
Knife (razor blade or hob scraper) or metal brush;
Baby or laundry soap;
A thin sharp object (needle or pin);
Iron;
Gloves;
Respirator, goggles.
Optionally, you can use special tools:
benzene solvent;
Silicone grease remover;
Any general purpose solvent such as acetone or Thinner 646;
Brake cleaner.
But they can be replaced with improvised means.
How to get silicone grease off clothes
It is better to dry-clean clothes made of delicate fabrics. It may not withstand chemical or mechanical stress. But the rest is easier.
If clothes made of dense fabrics are dirty, put them in the freezer for an hour or two. If the thing is large, you can use ice cubes in a bag, or hang it on the balcony in winter. The structure of the lubricant will become brittle, after which it can be gently pry with a knife or needle.
Tip: This method is suitable for removing fresh stains. If the contamination is old, an vinegar solution will help, in which it will be necessary to soak the clothes, then rub the dirty area with a cloth. On colored fabrics, it is necessary to act with a local method. Wipe the trace with vodka or alcohol, wait 15 minutes and remove the residue with a brush with medium bristles.
Other options:
Place a thick cloth under the stained fabric. Use a bottle of brake cleaner. Spray it on the contaminated area. Wait 20-30 minutes. Send things to the laundry.
Any solvent will do: refined gasoline, acetone, or nail polish remover. Wear gloves to prevent chemical burns, as well as a respirator and goggles. Soak a soft sponge in the solvent. Gently wipe the silicone mark with it and leave for half an hour. Repeat the procedure after the specified time. Rinse the clothes in hot water, then send them to the washing machine. When washing, use a good quality laundry detergent.
Baby soap will help soften the stain when lathered thoroughly. Wait about half an hour, then hand wash the clothes in warm water. Then do the soap again.
If the stain on the clothes is old, apply damp gauze to it, and steam it with an iron on top. The structure will soften, after which the silicone rubber will be removed.
Since solvents are caustic substances, washing after such treatment must be carried out especially carefully. It is desirable several times to finally remove the smells of gasoline or acetone.
How to wipe silicone grease from the skin of the hands
If there are no scratches, allergies and inflammations on the skin, then dilute the saline solution, put your hands there and wait 10-15 minutes. Then use a washcloth.
In the presence of damage to the skin, laundry soap will help. It does not immediately, but it will cleanse the skin of dirt. You can also heat a small amount of sunflower oil, apply to the skin, massage. Wash off with soap.
How to wipe silicone grease from glass and tiles
In this case, it is not necessary to resort to solvents. You can just scrape:
If, after repair, traces of sealant remain on glass or tile, a mechanical method will help. If handled carelessly, these surfaces can be scratched. Therefore, this method is best suited if you do not feel sorry for glass or tiles, and in the near future you plan to change the interior. Use a knife or blade to scrape off most of the grease, then sand with a pumice stone. An oil stain may remain, which can be easily removed with any detergent.
If you want to preserve the integrity of glass or tiles, then soak a dense cloth in saline and fold it like a bag. Salt crystals form on the surface of the tissue. After scraping off the dirt with a knife, rub the surface with a “bag of salt”.
If the tiles and glass are completely new, then gasoline thinner or white spirit will help. Put on gloves. Apply white spirit to the mark, wait 2-3 minutes. The silicone grease will soften and can be removed with a thin blade. Wipe the surface with a cloth dampened with solvent, then wipe with a dry cloth.
Tip: using white spirit, you can also process acrylic enamel in the bathroom. The main thing is to act very carefully so that a complete restoration of the bath is not needed.
How to wipe silicone grease from furniture
The choice of processing method depends on the material from which the furniture is made:
Silicone from plastic furniture is the easiest to remove. Large pieces must be cleaned with a spatula, then treated with acetone or refined gasoline to remove traces of fat.
With wooden furniture is more difficult. Solvents are not suitable, as there is a risk of spoiling the surface, especially if it is varnished. Take a wooden scraper and carefully scrape off the rubber mixture. This method takes time and patience.
In addition to a wooden scraper, you can also use a plastic one. Or a regular bank or discount card. Just try to scrape off traces of silicone grease with it.
How to wipe silicone grease from a car
The method also depends on the material on which the lubricant has fallen:
- If silicone gets on the windows of the car, the Mr. Muscle detergent or the like will come to the rescue. Apply with a sponge to the area, wait 20 minutes, then rinse with water. A product containing ethyl alcohol or ammonia is also suitable.
It is best to use the help of car wash employees who, using a special car shampoo, will remove all existing pollution.
Important points and useful tips
Silicone grease comes in many varieties. Each of them is made on a different basis. Therefore, it is necessary to carefully select the option for processing.
If the base consists of an acid, then it is best to remove it with silicone using vinegar.
To get rid of alcohol-based silicone, any alcohol will do: medical, technical or denatured. If you only have vodka on hand, you can also use it.
If there are amides, oximes, amines in the base, then ordinary or refined gasoline, white spirit or alcohol will do.
Useful tips:
Try to use a thin blade, preferably for a razor. It will deal less damage than the same knife. And the ideal solution would be to use a scraper for the hob – it practically does not scratch the materials at the base;
During the chemical treatment, ventilate the room. It is undesirable to have small children or pets nearby;
When cleaning fabrics with any of the solvents, acetone or refined gasoline, first apply a little to an inconspicuous area of uXNUMXbuXNUMXbthe fabric to check the effect of the solvent on the structure;
For processing tiles or glass surfaces, use pumice stone directly as a polish, as the same sandpaper will leave deep scratches;
Try to wipe off the sealant in time. Fresh stains are much easier to remove, since even a solvent may not be able to cope with old ones.
