Marks from a felt-tip pen are a rather unpleasant problem, since this kind of pollution is difficult to remove. But if you know what to use, the process of cleaning the sofa is not difficult. The main thing is to act consistently and correctly. The following are the most effective methods for cleaning stains from felt-tip pens of any kind.
General recommendations
It should be understood that one or another type of upholstery may react differently to different cleaning agents. Sometimes even the same material, but from different furniture brands, may have different wear resistance, color retention, etc. Before proceeding with the treatment of the sofa surface, it is recommended to test the selected product on an inconspicuous area of uXNUMXbuXNUMXbfurniture.
To remove a super-resistant marker that could not be removed by the methods presented below, only a stain remover will do. It must be used very carefully, strictly according to the instructions from the manufacturer, without exceeding the dosage. Otherwise, household chemicals may damage the material.
It is undesirable to use substances with a high content of surfactants to clean the sofa from the felt-tip pen: the marker is not able to penetrate the structure of the material so deeply that aggressive compounds are required to remove it. Substances containing bleaching components are applicable only for cleaning light-colored upholstery (such a composition is guaranteed to ruin dark and colored fabrics).
Important. It should be borne in mind that not every sofa can be qualitatively washed from a felt-tip pen. Among the most “fastidious” are white sofas, as well as models with colored upholstery. In the first case, markers (especially dark ones) are removed rather poorly, in the second case, the shade of the upholstery may fade.
We take into account the type of felt-tip pen
water marker
It is this type of felt-tip pen that is considered the least dangerous for furniture upholstery. Due to the peculiarities of its composition, it is easily removed from any material. The best option for removing traces of a water marker is ammonia added to soda in a ratio of 2: 1. The paste-like mixture is applied to the stain from the felt-tip pen for just a few minutes (for safety net, you can gently rub the contaminated area with a toothbrush). This, as a rule, is sufficient for high-quality removal of the trace.
Paint based marker
It is also far from the worst type of pollution, but, nevertheless, it is more difficult to remove it than a trace from a water-based marker. It’s all about the peculiarities of the chemical composition: the felt-tip pen penetrates deep into the structure of the fabric, and if you don’t know how to act, it’s unlikely that you can remove it from there.
The simplest household products will not be effective here (you can also forget about laundry soap). The only viable option is solvents. It is enough to blot the stain with a cotton sponge soaked in acetone or a stain remover, for example.
alcohol marker
Alcohol-based felt-tip pens can leave rather unpleasant marks on the upholstery of the sofa: they are difficult to attack by many household substances. But there is one component to which the alcohol marker does not have “immunity” – alcohol. To remove marks from a felt-tip pen, you can use any product containing alcohol: it can be medical alcohol, vodka, or even cologne. To make the product universal, you can add a little finely grated laundry soap to it: this composition will perfectly cope with pollution on both leather and fabric upholstery.
Industrial marker
The fat-based felt-tip pen is removed from the sofa using a product that has a similar composition. This means that oil (for example, vegetable) will best cope with traces of an industrial marker. In the case of leather furniture and leatherette upholstery, there will be no problems. But when processing fabric upholstery (and this cannot be ignored), after removing the trace from the marker, a greasy trace will remain. But this is a minor problem, since it is much easier to remove a fresh stain of fat than to buy new furniture.
Cleaning fabric upholstery
Processing the fabric upholstery of a sofa is a much more complicated process than processing leather and leatherette. But even here there are enough effective means. The main thing is to take into account two points: do not use colored cleaning agents for light upholstery and choose the right product, taking into account the characteristics of the fabric.
Hydrogen peroxide
Ideal for cleaning felt-tip pens from light-coloured, short-haired upholstery. It is enough to thoroughly blot the contaminated area with a cotton swab generously dipped in hydrogen peroxide. Leave for a few minutes. Then remove with any detergent and blot with a clean, damp cloth.
Sunflower oil
Ideal for removing grease-based markers. Apply a small amount of vegetable oil with a cotton sponge or a stick on the upholstery area contaminated with a felt-tip pen and leave to act for several hours (depending on the old age of the stain – 2-8 hours). Remove oil residues with mild soapy water. Rinse with clean water and dry thoroughly.
Alcohol
A universal tool that is equally effective for removing marks from felt-tip pens of any kind. Moisten a cotton swab or stick (depending on the size of the contamination) in alcohol (you can use any product containing alcohol). Intensively blot the area stained with the marker: no need to rub, just blot. Remove alcohol residues with clean water, dry the upholstery.
Laundry soap
The simplest tool that is in every home. Finely rub a small amount of laundry soap. Dissolve it in warm water. Using an old toothbrush, gently rub the resulting mixture into the contaminated area. Leave to act for 30-40 minutes. Remove by blotting with a damp clean cloth.
Important. Not suitable for removing paint marker marks.
Lemon juice + soda
Effective cleaner for long pile upholstery. Squeeze lemon juice, mix it with soda in approximately equal proportions. You should get a thick creamy mixture. Apply the finished composition to the contaminated area of u15bu20bupholstery using an old toothbrush or clothes brush. Wipe the stain thoroughly. Remove product residue after XNUMX-XNUMX minutes with a damp, alcohol-free cloth.
Soda + tooth powder
An effective method for removing marks from a water marker. Mix baking soda and tooth powder in equal proportions. Add some water to make a thick mixture. Apply the resulting composition in a dense layer on the trace from the felt-tip pen. Leave for a while. When the composition dries, remove its remnants from the upholstery with a clean, damp cloth.
Vinegar
A versatile option for removing marker stains on both fabric and leather and alternatives. To work, you need table 9% vinegar. Dissolve 1 teaspoon of vinegar and about the same amount of liquid detergent in 1 tbsp. water. Apply the resulting composition with blotting movements every 5 minutes for half an hour. Then gently rinse the treated area with a clean, damp cloth. Wipe with a dry towel.
Cleaning leather and leather upholstery
In this case, one universal effective way to remove the marker trace is recommended – alcohol. You can use any composition that contains alcohol in the base (it can even be vodka).
Step one. Soak a cotton pad well in alcohol.
Step Two. Then, with gentle, but rather intense movements, blot the contaminated area with an effective composition.
Step three. Repeat the procedure until the trace of the felt-tip pen disappears completely.
Step Four. Rinse the treated area of the sofa in any suitable way (a sponge soaked in water, a clean cloth, a washing vacuum cleaner, etc.).
