How to wash natural silk: can silk be washed

Natural silk fabric is incredibly tender, smooth and soft. It seems that it is very fragile and vulnerable, but this impression is mistaken – with proper care, products made from this fabric do not lose their properties for years (up to 10 years). The owner of an expensive dress or other silk item should know how to wash natural silk correctly. Then the favorite wardrobe item will delight its owner for a very long time.

The answer to the question of how to wash natural silk should be known to every owner of such a thing – the material is very vulnerable to detergents

Can silk be machine washed?

The washing machine is equipped with “delicate” and “manual” washing modes, which give gullible housewives false impressions of their safety.

  • No matter how gentle this technique is, it has a mechanical effect on the fabric, stretching and destroying its fibers.
  • As a result, after the first wash (sometimes things can withstand several such procedures), damage to the threads becomes noticeable on the canvas, which cannot be fixed.
  • Therefore, it is impossible to clean products in a washing machine even in the most innocent modes.

If the reason for the upcoming wash is a small stain, then it is better to get rid of it pointwise, without subjecting the entire product to a traumatic procedure.

  • This can be done with cotton wool or sponges, with which the cleaning agent will be applied to the dirt.
  • To remove unpleasant odors, it is enough to thoroughly ventilate the silk cloth.
  • If these measures are not enough, the product will have to be washed – and this can only be done by hand.

When soaking, the chance of shedding appears for each fabric (and for a smooth material it is much higher), so you need to start washing right away.

  1. Warm water (up to 40 degrees) is drawn into the basin, in which the detergent is diluted.
  2. The product is carefully washed, rinsed well under running water and wrung out very gently, preferably in a towel.
  3. This is due to the fact that wet silk breaks easily, especially with intense twisting.

Can silk be washed and with what?

The material is vulnerable to bleach, chlorine and other aggressive substances, so it must be cleaned with delicate means. These include:

  • gels for silk items;
  • soap solution;
  • shampoo.

When rinsing clothes, you can use an air conditioner, due to which the product will be less electrified and shed, it is better to iron it with an iron. A tablespoon of vinegar added to the water will help keep your favorite item bright and shiny.
