Gouache stains are very difficult to remove. Even washing powders do not always cope with them. Therefore, we have collected some tips and instructions on how to wash gouache at home using improvised means.

It is worth noting that the methods for removing gouache stains from white and colored items differ.

How to remove gouache from white fabric

Whites can be washed with bleach. For the care of children’s clothes, it is better to use oxygen rather than chlorine – they are “softer” and not so dangerous with insufficient rinsing. But before using bleach, you can use other means:

  1. First you need to wash off the excess gouache. This is a water soluble paint. Therefore, it is enough just to hold the thing under a stream of running water. If the fabric allows (you can read about this on the label), then you can use hot. If washing is allowed only at low temperatures, then the fabric is placed under a stream of cold water;

  2. Soak things in water. After that, generously rub the contaminated area with laundry soap. Use one that contains at least 72% fat. A strong foam should form on the surface of the contaminated area. Leave for a while, rubbing the stain periodically, and then wash the item as usual – but without contact with other clothes;

  3. If washing with laundry soap did not bring the desired result, then prepare another remedy – combine in equal proportions glycerin and ammonia. It will take a little – for example, 2 tablespoons of both. Apply the product to the stain and leave for an hour. After that, wash the thing as usual – but separately from other clothes;

  4. Soak the item and wring it out thoroughly. Place in a basin and pour oxygen bleach over the stain. Leave for 15-30 minutes (depending on the size and intensity of the gouache trace), then rinse and wash as usual – but separately from other things. When washing, you can also use oxygen bleach. But at the same time, it is very important to rinse the item thoroughly, especially when it comes to children’s clothes.

  5. Large stains can be treated with a solvent such as white spirit.. It is made on a kerosene basis, so you need to work with it in a well-ventilated area and wear protective rubber gloves. Soak a cotton ball or tissue in the solvent and wipe the stain. Leave for a while. Then rinse thoroughly and launder as usual.

Before use, test the solvent on an inconspicuous area of clothing to ensure it does not damage the fabric.

How to remove gouache from colored fabric

Do not use bleach when washing colored fabrics. It can cause the shades to fade. Therefore, it is better to use products based on vinegar or other substances:

  1. First you need to remove excess gouache. Place the stain under cold running water and let it sit for a few minutes. This will help wash most of the dye out of the fabric;

  2. Soak a cotton ball or washcloth in the vinegar and apply it to the stain. Leave for 20-30 minutes. After that, rinse the item and wash as usual, but without contact with other clothes. Thorough rinsing is required to get rid of the smell;

  3. Soak a cotton swab or tissue in 70% rubbing alcohol and apply to the stain. Leave for 20-30 minutes. After that, rinse the item and wash as usual, but without contact with other clothes. It should be noted that not all fabrics can be washed with alcohol. Therefore, it is best to first apply to a small, inconspicuous area, such as under the collar, to make sure that the substance does not discolor the paint. If there is no medical alcohol, then you can use ordinary vodka. The thing is soaked in it for 45-60 minutes. After that, it is washed and rinsed thoroughly;

  4. You can also use laundry soap. This is the best option for washing synthetic fabrics. Soak the item, then rub the stain with laundry soap 75% fat or higher. Try to get a strong lather. Leave for a while, rubbing the stain occasionally. After that, rinse the item and wash as usual – but without contact with other clothes.

You can also use a stain remover for colored laundry. Instructions for its use are usually indicated on the packaging. However, if the stain is large or old, then you can first soak the item with a stain remover:

  1. Moisten and squeeze out the thing;

  2. Put it in the basin so that the stain is at the top;

  3. Pour a little stain remover on the stain;

  4. Leave for 15-20 minutes;

  5. Rinse the item and wash it as usual.

Protect your hands with rubber gloves when handling vinegar. This is especially important if there are minor injuries on the skin – scratches, abrasions, cuts, acne or dermatological diseases. Contact with vinegar can cause inflammation.

How to remove gouache from upholstered furniture or carpet

If traces of paint have got on upholstered furniture or carpet, then they can be removed using a stain remover or washing powder. It is better, of course, to use specialized products – thanks to their surface-active properties, they “raise” the dirt, so it is easier to remove it:

  1. If possible, rinse the stain under running water. For this, the carpet can be lifted and a basin placed under the polluted place;

  2. After rinsing, dry the stain slightly. This can be done with a hair dryer. But at the same time, do not turn on the heating of the air, but blow it cold – due to high temperatures, the fabric of the carpet may be deformed or damaged;

  3. Prepare a carpet or upholstery cleaner. Follow the instructions on the package. Some products are spray applied, while others require dilution in water;

  4. Apply a small amount of product to the contaminated area. Do not overdo it, especially with upholstered furniture – the liquid should not get under the upholstery;

  5. After a few minutes, collect the excess product with a vacuum cleaner or a napkin;

  6. Repeat until the stain is gone.

You can dry the carpet or furniture after cleaning both naturally and by blowing cold air. Hold the blow dryer at a slight angle to the stain so you don’t “drive” the water under the upholstery or into the material. The right decision would be to place a sofa or carpet near the window, so that sunlight falls on it – then the stain will dry faster.

Before use, test the stain remover on a small, inconspicuous area of furniture or carpet to ensure it does not damage or fade the material.
