Is it possible to wash a down jacket: mode and temperature
It is traditionally believed that the filler of a down jacket is a duck or goose feather. Clothing made from natural fillers is very warm and more expensive, so many people take such things to the dry cleaners. But is it really impossible to wash a down jacket at home?
To determine if outerwear can be machine washed, look at the tag. There, the manufacturer clearly indicates in which mode and at what temperature to wash the product. If there is a hand wash only sign, then machine washing is prohibited.
You can determine the washing options by the filler. Take a look at the label, there may be names in Russian and English:
- If the label is down, then the product is down. Washing should be carried out carefully, at a temperature not exceeding 30 degrees. Only liquid detergents are used.
- The designation feather refers to a feather. You need to take care of the product in the same way as the first case.
- If wool is written, it is also a natural material that requires careful processing.
- When you see the inscription cotton, it means that the down jacket is filled with cotton wool.
- Other indications that can be found: dupont, hollow fiber, polyester – mean a synthetic filler.
It can be concluded that down jackets made from natural fillers (including camel fillers) can be washed by hand. But it is not easy to carry out the procedure, because when wet, the fluff will become twice as heavy. Drying such products should be even more thorough.
The upper part and the lining of the down jacket are made of synthetics, a membrane. Winter outerwear is usually made of polyester, nylon, polyamide, which are unpretentious to the washing regime.
Manual cleaning
Some items should not be washed at all. What to do? Clean the down jacket by hand in places of local contamination, without washing. To do this, take a brush and detergent. What is better to use? Colorless soap.
Any product that you use, first test on the lining of the product.
- Use a soapy brush to lather the contaminated area.
- Rinse off the foam with a slanting shower jet.
- Dry the product on a coat hanger in a ventilated area.
If you do not know how to remove greasy stains from the surface of the product, use gasoline. Rub the stain with a swab dipped in gasoline. Sprinkle salt or cornstarch on top. After wiping the stain, shake off the remaining salt.
If a stain has eaten into a thin white down jacket, try discoloring it. In equal proportions, mix ammonia and peroxide. Wipe the stain with the solution.
How to wash by hand
Regardless of the type of washing, in a machine or by hand, the product must be properly prepared. To do this, the lining is unfastened from the down jacket, the zipper and buttons are fastened. After that, the product is turned inside out.
What kind of powder to wash a down jacket? It is better to use soft liquid products, since ordinary powder does not rinse out well, leaving white streaks. For hand washing, you can use shampoo.
- Fill the container with water 30-40 degrees.
- Dilute the detergent.
- Dip the down jacket in the water for 20-30 minutes.
- Lightly rub the cloth or brush it.
- Rinse the product with plenty of water.

Machine washable
Products on synthetic winterizer and holofiber can be washed in a typewriter. On which program to wash and how many degrees to set:
- If your machine has a program for outerwear, choose it.
- You can also set the delicate and hand wash. These modes carry out washing at a temperature of 30-40 degrees.
- When washing natural fillers, so that the fluff does not go astray, turn off the spin cycle or set the minimum speed.
- Also, so that the filler does not clump, wash with tennis balls. They allow not only to wash clothes better, but also to break down the fluff during the rotation of the drum.
- To avoid white streaks, add 30-35 ml of liquid detergent or follow the instructions on the bottle.
After you have taken the down jacket out of the car, you can start drying.
How to dry a down jacket
You can dry the product by hanging it on a coat hanger. If you are drying outside, avoid direct sun. Periodically, you need to turn the down jacket on the wrong side and back. It is known that natural fillers dry for a long time and can cause an unpleasant odor. During drying, you need to constantly beat and distribute the filler.
What to do if the filler has gone astray? How to fix the situation? You can try to distribute it manually. If it does not come out, then you need to run the wash again with tennis balls. They will help break up clumps of fluff.
When choosing outerwear, pay attention to its filler. Also see if the product can be washed at home. Otherwise, buying a down jacket will also cost expensive care.
