Hundreds of characters that are not on the keyboard can be used in Microsoft Word documents. For example, you can insert fractions (½), Celsius sign (°), Pi (π), or currency symbols such as the British pound (£), etc. Each font has a set of characters and symbols.
To insert a symbol in a Word document, place the cursor at the desired location and click on the tab Insertion (Inset) on the Ribbon.
On the Advanced tab Insertion (insert) in section S (Symbols) click the icon Symbol (Symbol) and select More Symbols (Other characters).
In the dialog box Symbol (Symbol) in the drop down list Font (Font) Select the font from which you want to select a character.
You can go to a group of characters by selecting the desired option from the drop-down list subset (Kit).
Click on the required symbol and press Insertion (Insert).
Note: Dialog window Symbol (Symbol) does not close automatically after pasting. This allows you to insert more than one character at a time. When you are finished inserting characters, click Fermer (Close).
Characters that you have recently inserted into a Microsoft Word document appear in the list Recently used symbols (Formerly used symbols).
Each character is assigned a personal keyboard shortcut set by Microsoft. True, they are not so easy to remember, except to make a cheat sheet. But you can independently assign memorable keyboard shortcuts to symbols that are used most often. This way you don’t have to open the dialog Symbol (Character) each time or store in memory a variety of combinations.
There are two ways to assign keyboard shortcuts to symbols:
- The first method. Right-click on any of the tab names and from the drop-down menu select Customize the Ribbon (Ribbon setup).
Click the button Customize (Setting) to the right of the inscription Keyboard shortcuts (Keyboard shortcuts).
In the dialog box Customize Keyboard (Keyboard setting) scroll down the list Categories (Categories) and select Common Symbols (Symbols). Then, in the list on the right, highlight the character to which you want to apply the keyboard shortcut. Next, click on the field Press new shortcut key (New keyboard shortcut) and press shortcut keys. Click Assign (Assign). This keyboard shortcut has now been added to Current keys (Current combination).
Dialog window Customize Keyboard (Keyboard Customization) does not close automatically when you assign a keyboard shortcut. When finished, click on Fermer (Close).
Note: For more information about assigning keyboard shortcuts to Word commands, see this article.
- Press OK in the dialog box Word Options (Word Options) to close it.
- The second method. You can assign keyboard shortcuts directly in the dialog box S (Symbols) by pressing the button shortcut Key (Keyboard shortcut).
This will give you direct access to the dialog Customize Keyboard (Keyboard settings), where you can assign a keyboard shortcut to the selected character in the same way as described above.
With this method, the character specified in the dialog box Customize Keyboard (Keyboard Customization) is the character selected in the dialog box Symbol (Symbol).
After assigning keyboard shortcuts to symbols, press Fermer (Close).
More in the dialog Symbol (Symbol) tab Special characters (Special characters) You can insert additional characters and characters, such as special types of spaces, dashes, and hyphens. To insert a special character, select the desired one and click on Insertion (Insert).
You can also assign or change a keyboard shortcut for a special character using the button shortcut Key (Keyboard shortcut).
Assigning keyboard shortcuts in a dialog box Customize Keyboard (Keyboard setup) occurs in accordance with the algorithm described above.
We advise you to familiarize yourself with three fonts Wingdings in the dialog box Symbol (Symbol). In them you will find interesting symbols, signs and small pictures.
