How is the polyps in the throat treated? Does surgery involve polyps? Can polyps in the throat cause unpleasant health consequences? Can they lead to breathing problems? The question is answered by the drug. Anna Mitschke.
How is the polyps in the throat treated?
Good day. My husband has been for several years throat problems. Pains came regularly, but that was not the worst of it. The husband was constantly hoarse and snored terribly at night. The snoring was unbearable anymore, sometimes I didn’t know what to do to such an extent that I just went to sleep in the living room. Finally, my husband was persuaded to see a doctor. I signed him up for an ENT, he went and it turned out that he has polyps in the throat. I don’t know what it means or what this disease is.
I would like to ask how to treat polyps in the throat? Is my husband waiting for an operation now? So far he has been given some pills, but the doctor has not explained to him whether he needs surgery or not and now we have to wait for the next visit. How to treat polyps in the throat? Is this a problem that could lead to some serious consequences? Is there a risk that my husband will choke at some point with polyps in his throat? Now I am afraid if he snores, because I am afraid he will choke and he will not be able to catch his breath … Could I ask you for answers to my questions?
The doctor explains how to treat polyps in the throat
Often the term “throat polyps” is a misnomer laryngeal polyps. Polyps are protrusions of the mucosa. They often appear in people who use their voice professionally, e.g. teachers, singers, presenters, politicians, priests, actors, but also smokers or people who have contact with harmful substances (pollution, dust, smoke), allergy sufferers or in hormonal disorders. Laryngeal polyps can manifest themselves as hoarseness, impaired voice (even leading to silence), difficulty speaking, and even disrupting breathing. Management of polyps is operative.
Nasal polyps are a common condition, which is manifested by nasal congestion, nasal discharge, flowing down the back of the throat, and impaired sense of smell and taste. They can cause headaches characteristic of blocked sinuses, a feeling of pressure, or toothache and snoring. Nasal polyps can cause recurrent upper respiratory tract infections. They most often develop as a result of inflammatory changes in young or middle-aged people. They are more common in patients with asthma (especially aspirin), allergic fungal sinusitis, cystic fibrosis, Churg-Strauss syndrome. Their family presence is also noticed.
The diagnostics includes laryngological examination, rhinoscopy, fiberoscopy, computer toomography, magnetic resonance imaging and others.
The doctor makes a diagnosis and, based on it, decides on treatment. The choice of treatment is always selected individually for the patient, his needs, presented symptoms, and accompanying diseases. Treatment of sinus polyps is often based on treating the underlying disease that led to their onset. Conservative treatment includes glucocorticosteroids, antiallergic drugs and others. When conservative treatment fails, multiple polyps occur, surgery can be used. Most often, polyps are removed endoscopically. The procedure is called functional endoscopic surgery (FESS).
