How to treat a tooth abscess?
Pain in a tooth, bacteria that proliferate, swelling, pus, it is tooth abscess, painful and dangerous. What exactly is a tooth abscess? Something that needs to be treated quickly, but how?
Tooth abscess ? Go through the dentist box!
To treat a tooth abscess, you start by picking up your phone and making an appointment as soon as possible. Sometimes it is even an emergency, especially if there are signs of a more extensive infection:
- if the temperature is high
- if the face swollen.
In the event of a disease reducing immunity, it is also an emergency:
- If you have diabetes,
- If you are taking immunosuppressive therapy (organ transplant, autoimmune disease),
- If you are undergoing chemotherapy.
- If you are HIV positive.
And for certain heart problems (damaged valve for example), it is essential to consult quickly.
What to do while waiting for the dentist?
- Start by taking a pain medication, paracetamol (or acetaminophen).
- Do not take anti-inflammatory drugs, as they can make the infection worse.
- Apply local anesthetic gel to the painful area in order to provide relief.
- Place a clove in the mouth on the painful area (numbing and antibacterial effect) if you do not have numbing gel. Be careful to wash the clove with water before using it. You can also make an infusion (3 cloves 10 minutes in boiling water) then gargle with this preparation (pass the liquid on the painful area). Another solution: use clove essential oil (1 drop in a tablespoon of table oil) and brush the painful area with a cotton swab.
- Homeopathy: Pyrogenium 7 CH: 2 granules every 3 hours. Calendula 5 CH: 2 granules 3 times a day. Hepar Sulfur 15 CH: One dose no effect with Pyrogenium (2 hours later at least).
- Apply an ice pack to the cheek at the painful area. Be careful, put a cloth between the skin and the ice pack and do not leave it too long so as not to cause cold burns (no more than 10 minutes)! Then replace it as soon as the skin has warmed up a bit.
- Make mouthwashes with baking soda dissolved in water (a teaspoon for a glass of water.
- Continue to brush your teeth morning and night with a very soft toothbrush.
- Do not chew on the side where the abscess is.
- Do not use dental floss or inter-dental brushes on the side of the abscess.
- Do not take an antibiotic at random from your first aid kit.
What does the dentist do?
- He examines you, and possibly practices an X-ray.
- It anesthetizes you (phew!)
- It evacuates the abscess.
- It cleans the area of the canals of the tooth by removing the infected tissue.
- It clogs the ducts by putting in place a paste to prevent the abscess from reforming.
- He will prescribe an antibiotic if necessary, if the infection has spread.
- When the abscess is large, the dentist may have to extract a tooth.
Be careful, a toothache or gum pain is not necessarily a tooth abscess. There are many different kinds of dental pain.
