The time for hipsters and casual looks like it’s over. At the latest fashion shows, models sported suits, tuxedos, ties and bow ties. And if men have no questions about clothes – they threw it on, buttoned it up and went, then with accessories, many get a snag. Modern men have forgotten how to tie ties …
Our instruction will help you remember how to tie a tie and not fall face down at a high society reception. Or maybe at a reception at Buckingham Palace, what the hell is not joking!
Step by step instructions for tying a tie
The easiest way to tie a tie is to make a regular knot (see video above). You need to tie this (however, like all subsequent knots) on a raised collar. Place the tie so that its narrow end on the left hangs down to half of the wide end (it is on the right).
If you’re left-handed, swap the wide and narrow ends to make it easier for your dominant hand to tie the knot.
With a wide half, wrap the thin one from right to left, and insert it into the loop formed – from the outside to the inside. Tighten lightly.
Repeat the same movement with the same wide end, only on the other side (from left to right) and throw the wide end back into the loop. Only this time from the inside out.
And now attention! Bringing the wide end outward, it must be carefully inserted into the loop formed. A knot is formed (it should be about 2,5 centimeters below the collar). Straighten it. Tighten.
Pull the collar down and make sure it doesn’t bulge in the back. The knot should sit right in the middle of the collar.
Important! If you prefer to look fashionable and modern, you can tie a tie knot a few inches below the collar, however, for formal occasions, it should look conservative. That is, to be close to the throat and tied tightly.
How to tie a thin tie
This looks better if tied with a small knot.
It is in many ways similar to the first, but when tying it, you will have to skip a few steps.
It is enough to wrap the thin end with the wide end once and throw it – attention! – from inside to outside.
Insert into the loop formed.
Straighten and tighten. It is done!
Ties of a small width are suitable for any occasion and dress code. But the most suitable style will be casual or “sham negligence”.
How to tie a bow tie
If you are not a fan of tuxedos, then bow ties are probably not worn often. Which means you don’t know how to tie them either. Meanwhile, it is no more difficult than tying a regular tie. And in some ways even easier – because the scheme is very similar to the one that laces up shoes.
So, we place the bow tie around the neck so that its right end is about a third longer than the left.
Next, cross both ends of the tie so that the long right half is on top of the left (or vice versa if you are left-handed). In this case, both halves should intersect in their narrowest parts.
Throw the right end from the inside out – a simple knot is formed. Don’t overtighten it.
Fold the end that remains on the left side in half, thereby forming a semblance of a butterfly.
Wrap the right end around the butterfly (made from the left end) in the middle. And form the second half of the butterfly from the second end (see video).
Spread the resulting whole butterfly with both hands. To secure the knot, grab both ends of the bow tie and pull lightly to adjust the center knot. Ready!
How to tie a windsor tie
This knot takes its name from the Duke of Windsor, the former King of England, who abdicated in 1936 to marry a low-born “divorcee” Wallis Simpson. The Duke of Windsor was a famous fashionista, and the knot, which he invented himself and which received his name.
So, place the tie so that its wide end hangs on the left 30 cm below the narrow one.
Pass the wide end over the narrow end. You should end up with a slightly uneven “X”.
Pass the wide end of the tie through the loop – from the inside out.
Pull the wide end out completely. Pull it slightly to the right.
Stretch it under the formed knot again from right to left, only this time from the inside (from the side of the chest).
Throw the wide end over the narrow end again and throw it from the left side inside the loop. The result should be two small knots on the right and left on the “collar” (rim around the neck).
Once again, wrap the wide end of the narrow one from left to right and pass it from the inside of the “collar” outward, and then pass it through the resulting knot.
Pull the wide end down. Straighten.
The result is a voluminous knot with elegant symmetry and looks much better than the typical quarter knot.
An important detail: the tip of the tied tie should be in the middle of the belt buckle.
How to tie a long tie
Put the tie on the inside of you, with the seams inward. The wide end is on the right, and the narrow end is on the left, at the level of the middle between the chest and abdomen.
Place the wide end over the narrow end to form a crosshair.
Wrap the narrow side with the wide end of the tie from the outside from right to left. And then inside from left to right.
Repeat the movement from right to left again and pass the wide end under the formed loop from the inside out.
Pass it through the knot formed on the front side.
Pull the wide end down, tightening slightly. Use the narrow end to adjust the length. Then tuck it into a special loop at the wide end (it is located on the wrong side). It is done!
By the way, the most common ties today have a width of 8,25 centimeters to 9,5 centimeters. Thinner ties up to 6,35 centimeters are more popular among young people. And they were fashionable to wear in the 60s. Closer to the 1980s, ties of 10 centimeters or more became popular.
