The best way to teach your kids is to play. Also for reading. Even the smallest children who do not know the letters yet can have a great reading fun. Here are three ways to instill in your child the joy of reading.
Why is it worth teaching a child to read early?
Teaching children to read has become the subject of intense research with the advent of new media and technology. Traditional books began to give way to digital editions, and then to audiobooks. Meanwhile, reading is an important human heritage that is needed and worth cherishing. The core curriculum in Polish kindergartens assumes only preparation for learning to read and write. And this is the best time to properly teach children to read, because their minds are very receptive then. Scientists have discovered how to teach a child to read independently at home.
How to teach a child to read – the letter method
The traditional and, at the same time, the most popular method of learning to read is the letter method. It is used in primary schools and treated as a base for primers. It consists in teaching children the alphabet in the first place. The next step is to divide words into sounds and combine sounds into full words. This is followed by teaching children to read by spelling out the simplest words. Once you’ve mastered this stage, it’s time for longer words and then sentences. This method is schematically simple, but not always understandable for students.
How to teach a child to read effectively?
This will be done by learning to read syllables. It is a very simple method that simultaneously develops cognitive functions. Its quick effects effectively motivate the child to work. It can replace the traditional way of teaching children to read, but it is also suitable for toddlers who are not yet attending school. It consists in presenting the child graphically vowels, which the child repeats later. Then comes the consonants. Once they are mastered, we can start to combine consonants and vowels in syllables in various combinations (PA, PE, PO, PI, PU, etc.).
The syllable method of learning to read requires many repetitions. It is a good idea to consolidate the acquired skills through games such as memos or matching syllables, and then combining them into simple words. Learning to read full words can also be done using pictures and blocks with the appropriate syllables. The fixed words, in turn, can be combined into simple sentences. How to teach a child to read more difficult words using the syllable method? It is enough to add blocks with single letters to cards or blocks with open syllables and arrange them into more complicated words.
How To Teach Your Child To Read The Glenn Doman Method?
The Glenn Doman Method is also known as the Global Reading Method. It works well in teaching the youngest children to read, including those who do not know letters at all. The method is based on the regular recording of the material, with the proviso that the toddler must be refreshed and full so that he can focus on playing.
So how do you teach a little child to read? Prepare cards with specific words. To begin with, they should be the simplest – for example, identify family members. The global reading method involves showing your child the cardboard and saying the word aloud as the child looks at the cardboard. During the day, you can show your toddler a few words, but the whole set must be repeated up to three times a day. After five days of such training, we ask the child what is written on the cardboard. Teaching your child to read this way suggests being optimistic when your child guesses, but never reprimand your child for an incorrect answer. It’s just a game of reading.
