How to take care of your face when playing sports

Woman’s Day and Sven Fey, head of the NIVEA facial skin care laboratory, learned 8 rules to help keep your face healthy and looking when exercising.

Rule 1: listen to your feelings

Active sports are stressful and challenging for the skin, especially when it comes to the skin of the face. If sport has appeared in your life, more attention should be paid to the face, since with active physical activity all skin problems can aggravate.

Rule 2: cleanse your face thoroughly before and after training

When playing sports, as a rule, active sweating occurs, so before starting a workout, be sure to wash off your makeup and thoroughly cleanse your face. If you have sensitive skin, bring your towel or disposable tissues to the gym to remove excess sweat from your face.

Towels that are handed out at the club are usually washed with very active powders that can cause allergies. A good cleansing is also necessary after exercise, since sweat and fat particles are an excellent breeding ground for the development of bacteria.

Rule 3: actively moisturize and nourish your skin after exercise

There is one caveat here: it should be remembered that for many people the process of perspiration after exercise continues for more than half an hour, so the moisturizer should be applied no earlier than 40 minutes after exercise, after having thoroughly cleansed the face. As for the nutrition of the skin of the face, then after training it is also necessary.

It is worth looking at foods that contain nutrients such as almond oil. It softens and nourishes the skin and enhances its natural protective properties thanks to the content of unsaturated oleic acid, identical to skin lipids.

Rule 4: don’t forget about sun protection when playing sports outdoors

If you play sports in the mountains or in open water, remember to use specially formulated products that protect your face from ultraviolet rays. In this case, the SPF factor should be at least 30. It is also recommended to use special protective equipment when playing sports in the cold.

Rule 5: beware of rosacea

Couperosis of the skin is a disease in which blood circulation is impaired, and the vessels lose elasticity and begin to expand. As a result, small capillaries turn into red or purple stars.

It is believed that only light, thin and dry skin is prone to rosacea, but this is not at all the case. With regular active sports, you are automatically at risk. If you notice that the vessels have become more noticeable on the skin of the face, follow these rules: in the morning, apply a cream with an SPF15 + factor, in the evening – special substances that strengthen the walls of the vessels (for example, products containing avocado, almond or grape seed oil).

Also, add foods that contain ascorbic acid to your diet. When faced with the problem of rosacea, remember: you are not recommended to visit the sauna or bath immediately after the gym.

Rule 6: avoid drugs with active substances before training

Today, many cosmetic products contain highly active substances such as retinol, high concentrations of ascorbic acid, glycolic and a number of fruit acids. They are successfully used both for the treatment of problem skin and for the prevention of aging, but they should not be applied to the skin of the face before playing sports.

After applying such a lotion or cream, at least two hours should pass before active fitness. Otherwise, these agents can cause dermatitis of the skin of the face, which can worsen with an active blood supply. For the same reason, it is not recommended to visit the tanning salon immediately after training.

Rule 7: drink plenty of water

With active sweating during exercise, the body’s water-salt balance is often disturbed. Dehydration affects the entire body, including the skin of the face. To avoid this, it is recommended to drink 2-3 sips of water after each set of exercises. Remember the water should be at room temperature.

A balanced diet is especially important when exercising. It is necessary to exclude from the diet foods that load the liver and contain preservatives. If this topic raises questions, consult your doctor.
