How to store tomatoes: tips. Video
It is quite possible to preserve the flavor and nutritional properties of tomatoes for quite a long period of time. In order for the tomatoes to lie for a long time, you need to follow the simple rules for their storage.
How to store tomatoes properly
The first step is to sort out those tomatoes that will be stored. For a fairly long time, only whole vegetables will lie, without damage and rot. At the same time, you need to sort the good tomatoes according to the degree of maturity: the more ripe they are, the less time they are stored. Tomatoes must not be washed before storage.
Fresh tomatoes keep very well in the refrigerator. Place them in the fruit and vegetable drawer in one or maximum two layers. They can be stored in other compartments of the refrigerator, in which case they must first be placed in plastic bags so that the vegetables do not lose moisture.
You can put a container of tomatoes in a dark closet or lay the tomatoes under the bathroom.
If there are a lot of tomatoes, and they all do not fit in the refrigerator, put them in one, maximum two layers in a drawer, basin or basket and put them in the coolest place in the apartment. It is necessary that vegetables be stored at a temperature of no more than 10-12 ° C. Before laying tomatoes, it is advisable to put straw or burlap on the bottom of the container. The tomatoes should be stalk facing up. It is recommended to sprinkle each row with sawdust. To prevent light from falling on the tomatoes, which will shorten their shelf life, you need to cover them with a thick dark cloth.
How are green tomatoes stored
Green tomatoes can be stored until winter, in which case a lot depends on their degree of ripeness. They are stored in the same conditions as ripe tomatoes: – placed in one, maximum two layers, if possible, on sawdust or on straw; – placed in a cool place; – covered with a thick cloth so that they are stored without access to light.
Periodically, you need to inspect the tomatoes for damage, if the rotten vegetable is not removed in time, other tomatoes may also deteriorate.
It is better to store tomatoes with an intact stalk, so they will be stored a little longer.
Small fruits with a mass of about sixty grams are stored the longest. Good air circulation in the room where they are located will help to extend their shelf life. If possible, tomatoes should be placed in a through corridor. Vegetables are well preserved in baskets, which it is advisable to hang on the wall.
Fully ripe tomatoes are stored for three days at room temperature, in the refrigerator at zero temperature for a week. Green tomatoes keep well at room temperature for three weeks while ripening at the same time.
