How to store bacon in the refrigerator: smoked, salted
Lard is a versatile snack that can help out when there is nothing else at hand but a slice of bread. It can be stored for a very long time, but for this you need to know how to store fat correctly. Consider ways to store fresh, salted and smoked bacon.
Fresh, unsalted lard is used for preparing minced meat, ghee, for frying.
Fresh lard should only be stored in the freezer, otherwise it will quickly deteriorate.
For storage, it is cut into small pieces that are convenient to use at a time.
Each piece must be wrapped in plastic wrap. Fresh bacon can be stored in the freezer for up to a year.
The salted product can be stored in several ways:
- In the same container in which the lard was salted, only by removing it to a cold place. In winter it is a balcony, in a private house there is a veranda. In a cold and dry cellar, you can keep lard sprinkled with salt for six months or even longer.
- In the freezer. Each piece of bacon should be wrapped with a napkin or a piece of clean cloth that will absorb excess moisture. After that, wrap in plastic wrap and put in the freezer. Before use, hold frozen bacon for a couple of hours at room temperature.
- In the refrigerator in a jar of brine or sprinkled with salt and pepper. In this form, lard is edible for up to three months.
If it is necessary for the lard to lie in the refrigerator for only a few days, you need to wrap it tightly in a bag or film so that it does not wind up and does not reward other products with its smell.
Salted lard, boiled or baked in the oven, can only be stored in the freezer. If the temperature is above zero, it will deteriorate within a week.
For several days of storage, smoked bacon can be wrapped in paper and a bag and put in the refrigerator. For a longer period, it should be placed in the freezer. In winter, smoked bacon can be preserved by wrapping it in parchment or baking paper and hanging it in the attic. Can also be hung on a cold balcony, but not in direct sunlight.
Smoked bacon suspended in the basement is also well stored, but provided that there is no dampness, otherwise mold on the bacon will appear very quickly.
If you notice traces of mold on a piece, do not cut off the affected areas, the use of such a product is dangerous, it will have to be thrown away entirely.
