Supplemental Vaccine Dose – Who Is Eligible?
The government has extended the group of people who can receive a third, “top-up” dose of the vaccine. From November 2, all willing adults can do it.
Previously, this concerned people aged 50 and over, regardless of whether they have chronic diseases or not, as well as people who had direct contact with patients, i.e. healthcare professionals.
– We talked with the Medical Council about the best possible protection of people most exposed to the severe course of COVID-19 and a recommendation of the Council of Ministers was developed to be able to use the so-called booster dose – Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced a few weeks ago.
Extra dose of vaccine – who is eligible?
An “extra” dose of the COVID-19 vaccine is given to “immunocompromised people”. The Medical Council has published a detailed list of diseases and therapies in which resistance to SARS-CoV-2 infection is severely limited.
The government complied with these recommendations and from the beginning of September, the following people were entitled to an additional dose:
- receiving active anti-cancer treatment,
- after organ transplants receiving immunosuppressive drugs or biological therapies,
- after stem cell transplant in the last 2 years,
- with moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency syndromes (e.g. DiGeorge syndrome, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome),
- with advanced or untreated virus infection HIV,
- currently treated with high doses of corticosteroids or other medications that may suppress the immune response
- chronically dialysed for renal failure.
The condition is the age of 12 and completion of the full vaccination schedule (two doses) with Comirnata (Pfizer), Spikevax (Moderna) or Vaxzevria (AstraZeneca).
Referral for additional vaccination – how and when can it be obtained?
E-referrals have been issued for “immunocompromised people” since September 1. According to the assessment of the Medical Council, there are well over 200 such people. By October 28, over 220 were given. doses of “supplementary” vaccine.
We remind you that the condition for issuing an e-referral for an “additional” dose is the completion of the full vaccination course. For immunocompromised people, this referral is issued from an automaton 28 days after receiving the second dose of the vaccine.
- How does the immune system work?
Regarding the “top-up” dose, referrals are issued to all adults from November 2 onwards. Previously, from September 23, this applied to health care workers and people over 50.
By October 28, almost 730 were given. “supplemental” doses.
In this case, too, a certain period of time must elapse after full vaccination. «A booster dose is used in the indicated groups with an interval of at least 6 months after the completion of the full course of vaccination against COVID-19 ″, informs the Ministry of Health.
Whether the referral has already been issued can be checked on the Patient’s Online Account.
If you are entitled to supplementary or additional vaccination and the appropriate deadline has expired and you have not found your referral to IKP, then – according to the information from the Ministry of Health – «The doctor may issue a referral for a booster vaccination himself, following the recommendations set out in the announcement of the Ministry of Health regarding the groups eligible for booster vaccinations and the planned interval of its administration«.
