How to sew puffs with your own hands? Video course
Puffs are volumetric assemblies fixed with a line. A product decorated in this way looks magnificent and luxurious. Most often, puffs can be seen on curtains, but nothing prevents you from decorating in this way, for example, decorative pillowcases and bedspreads, and even making panels.
Volumetric assemblies can be made on any material. But before you go to the store, imagine what a lambrequin, bedspread or decorative pillowcase will look like if they are sewn from variegated fabric or from material with a large pattern. The puffs will simply not be visible, and all your efforts will be wasted. The most suitable fabric is plain color or with a very small and not too bright pattern. The material should be dense enough, but at the same time it should be well draped. Velvet, natural silk, some curtain fabrics, thick satin are suitable. Please note that the fabric will need a little more than usual. For the simplest puffs, multiply the length by 1,5.
If the puffs are shallow and thick, you may need 2 times more material
To sew puffs, you need a diagram. You can find it in a craft magazine (for example, in which various models of curtains are presented) or you can come up with it yourself. It is better for a novice needlewoman to use ready-made schemes, since it is not difficult to find them. You probably have the right tools at hand: – a ruler; – a needle; – a sharpened chalk; – scissors; – threads to match the color of the fabric.
Threads should be completely invisible on the material
Sewing puffs begins with marking. Spread the prepared material on a horizontal surface with the wrong side up. Mark the entire segment vertically and horizontally, placing dots with chalk at a distance of 1,5-2 cm. Covering a large segment with dots is, of course, tedious, but necessary. In each diagram, certain points are indicated through which the thread is pulled. It is better to mark with a ruler, and it should be long enough. For example, a wooden or metal tailor’s meter is suitable. Number all rows vertically and horizontally, grouping them by 2. In the first row of each pair there will be odd numbers, in the second – even numbers. After you have marked out the entire cut, draw the diagonals.
The preparatory work usually takes much longer than the production of the puff itself. Any scheme indicates which points need to be connected and in what sequence. The simplest option is zigzag puffs. Connect points 1 and 2 with several stitches, then points 3 and 4 are also connected, and the thread between points 2 and 3 is not pulled together. Dots are numbered from left to right. If you decide to come up with a circuit yourself, consider this rule.
