What you need to sew a coat

There is a video tutorial on how to create a straight cut coat at the end of the page. We will tell you about a poncho, or a cape coat. You don’t need a pattern to sew it. And you only need to measure the distance from one wrist to the other. To do this, stand up straight and spread your arms to the sides. This will determine the length and width of the cape.

Then choose a fabric for the coat. It is advisable to use a double-sided material, since the poncho will not have a lining, and you need to make it look beautiful inside too. Having decided on the fabric and size of the future coat, do not forget to add 15 cm for processing.

In addition to the material, you will need:

  • threads of the same color;
  • sewing machine;
  • scissors;
  • tape measure;
  • chalk or remnants.

If you want, the coat can be decorated with buttons, appliqué, add a collar and belt, or insert a zipper.

The poncho can be made in a square or round shape. To do this, cut the shape you want from a piece of fabric using the length from wrist to wrist. Fold the material 4 times, the corner is the future neck of the coat, it must be cut off. You can use a plate to draw the neckline for the collar. Place ¼ part of it on the corner of the fabric, chalk around and cut out.

The coat can be made with or without sleeves. In the second case, simply trim the collar. For this:

  • attach the fabric to another piece of the same material so that it is larger than the neck;
  • circle along the contour;
  • cut a 5 cm wide ring from the cut;
  • attach it to the neck and baste;
  • stitch on a sewing machine and wrap it inside the coat.

To prevent the facing from popping out, iron the fold or make a second seam 1 cm from the edge.

To get the sleeves, sew the side edges of the coat to the desired level for the desired width. And if you want it to unfasten, cut it in front to the neck before stitching and insert the zipper. Finally, trim the edges of the poncho with piping. The coat is ready, you can start decorating.

A beautiful coat does not have to be bought in a boutique or ordered from an atelier. In just one evening, you can sew it yourself and decorate it at your discretion.
