How to sew a baby patchwork quilt with your own hands
If you decide to sew a baby patchwork quilt, get creative when choosing a fabric. Kids especially like bright fabrics with animals or birds. A blanket made of such fabrics plays the role of a developing rug, because a child can look for animals indicated by his mother on it or learn colors.
It takes a little time and patience to sew a beautiful baby patchwork quilt.
Novice craftswomen choose fabrics that are similar in texture, for example, linen, chintz and calico. Experienced needlewomen experiment with complex combinations of satin, silk, chintz and satin. Fabrics buy or use unnecessary bedding and other items. But you need to think over the design of the product well and draw a sketch on paper. Patch sections should be repeated. The lining and border should be monochromatic and in harmony in color with the main shades of the patches.
Sintepon or batting is used as a filler – warm, light and voluminous materials. For padding, you can also use an old duvet made of bike or wool.
To sew a baby patchwork quilt with your own hands, you need to have at your disposal:
- big table;
- sewing machine;
- iron;
- thread;
- cardboard template;
- pins;
- chalk for marking;
- scissors;
- centimeter tape.
The template can be of any shape. If you are just learning the patchwork technique, start with simple squares. Leave 10 mm for allowances. Therefore, it is convenient to draw the template on cardboard, add 1 cm to it from all sides and cut out along the outside. Then the middle of the resulting square is cut out, resulting in a frame of the desired size. This allows the shreds to be sewn together evenly.
How to sew a baby patchwork quilt with your own hands
First, the fabrics intended for the front side are cut out. For a standard baby blanket measuring 110 x 140 cm, you will need 192 scraps of 8 x 8 cm.Process of work:
- Number the patches.
- Iron the squares.
- Pins the two pieces together and sew. By this principle, make long stripes across the entire width of the blanket.
- Iron all seams and sew stripes.
- Unfold the lining, lay out the filler and face cloth.
- Straighten any wrinkles and wrinkles and secure with pins.
- Proceed to machine stitch on the blanket, starting from the center.
- Cut off excess lining and filler, leaving 15 mm on all sides.
- Cut four strips of fabric, fold in half, iron and sew.
- Process the corners of the product with a blind seam.
If it is not possible to make a machine stitch, this step should be skipped. Do a hand stitch at the very end pointwise or along the perimeter of the squares.
The work is painstaking, but the result is worth the effort and time. A small child is unlikely to appreciate such work, but older children will definitely pay attention to such a wonderful thing.
