How to Restore Default Ribbon Preferences in Microsoft Office 2013

The Microsoft Office applications allow you to customize the Ribbon. You can add commands to existing tabs, create your own custom tabs, or customize the Quick Access Toolbar. However, you may need to reset the ribbon settings to their original state.

Note: Resetting all Ribbon preferences will reset all Quick Access Toolbar preferences. If you need to save your settings, be sure to make a backup.

To restore default ribbon settings, right-click an empty space on any ribbon tab and select Customize the ribbon (Customize the Ribbon). For example, we will do this in Word.

At the bottom right of the dialog box Word options (Word Options) click Reset (Reset) next to the pointer Setting (Customizations):

  • To reset all Ribbon and Quick Access Toolbar preferences, select Reset all settings (Reset all customizations) from the dropdown menu.
  • To reset only one tab, highlight that tab in the list above and click on Reset only the selected ribbon tab (Reset only selected Ribbon tab).

A dialog box will appear asking you to confirm your intention to delete all settings. If you are sure you want to remove the settings for the Ribbon and Quick Access Toolbar, click Yes (Yes).

Note: Remember that before deleting the settings, you can make a backup copy of them.

Press OKto close the dialog Word options (Word Options).

In the same way, you can reset the Ribbon and Quick Access Toolbar preferences in all Office applications that have them.
