In this article we will tell how to quickly remove all extra hyperlinks from excel sheet at once and prevent their occurrence in the future. The method described in this article works in all versions of Excel from Excel 2003 up to the latest versions of Excel 2013 and 2016.
Every time you enter an email address or a link in a cell, Excel automatically converts it into a clickable hyperlink. From personal experience, we can say that this feature is more of a hindrance than a help.
So, by typing a new email address into the table or by editing the link and pressing the “Enter” key, you can use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Zto remove the automatically generated hyperlink.
First, we will show how to remove accidentally created extra hyperlinks, and then how you can turn off this feature in Excel.
Remove multiple hyperlinks in all versions of Excel
Versions of Excel 2000-2007 do not have a built-in function to remove multiple hyperlinks at once. Here you can only delete one by one. But there is a simple trick to get around these restrictions. This method also works in versions of Excel 2010-2013.
- Select a cell outside of your table.
- In this cell, write “1”.
- Copy this cell (CTRL + C).
- Select cells that contain hyperlinks: click on any cell with data in a column and press Ctrl+Space to select the entire column.
- If there is a need to select multiple columns: after you have selected a column, hold Ctrl, click on any cell in the second column and press Space to select all cells in the second column without losing the first.
- Right-click anywhere in the selected area, in the context menu that appears, select the “Paste Special” function.
- In the dialog box that appears, under Operation, select Multiply.
- Click OK. All hyperlinks removed 🙂
Remove hyperlinks in two clicks (Excel 2010 and Excel 2013 only)
In Excel 2010, Microsoft has finally added a feature to remove multiple hyperlinks at once.
- Select the entire column that contains hyperlinks: select any cell with data and press Ctrl+Space.
- Right-click anywhere in the selected area and select “Remove Hyperlinks” from the context menu that appears.
Attention! If you select only one cell, then in the context menu the name of the function will change to “remove hyperlink”. Good example of user friendliness 🙁
- All hyperlinks from the column have been removed 🙂
Disable automatic hyperlink generation in Excel
- In Excel 2007 click on “Office”-> Options
In Excel 2010-2013 go to File -> Options.
- In the Options tab dialog box, in the left column, select Spelling and select AutoCorrect Options.
- In the AutoCorrect dialog box, select the AutoFormat As You Type tab and uncheck Hyperlinked Internet Addresses and Network Paths.
- In the two windows, click “OK” to close them and return to the Excel sheet.
Excel will now save your links and email addresses in text format 🙂
If you need to create an active hyperlink, press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Kto open the Insert Hyperlink dialog box.
