Rhinestones are held on the fabric with a special glue. But, unfortunately, they tend to fall off – due to mechanical contact or improper washing. And the glue remains. You can still remove its traces – we have collected some tips and tricks for removing traces of rhinestones.
Before you figure out how to remove hardened stains, you need to find out what kind of glue was used to attach the rhinestones. Since for each type of cleaning is done individually.
Types of glue and chemical methods for its removal
Thermoactive. Apply cold. It is finally fixed with special heating tools. The rhinestones stick to it tightly. They must be carefully attached, because it is very difficult to remove them later. If the rhinestones fall off or come off, dark hard dots remain on the clothes, which are almost impossible to remove. Someone uses heating, but this method will only aggravate the situation. The ideal remedy is solvent 646.
“Hot”. One of the most common types. It is used, for example, when self-applying rhinestones. Sticks of glue are inserted into the gun, where it heats up, becomes liquid. It fills in the fibers of the fabric, gluing them with decorative embellishments. Traces of “hot” glue look like white transparent spots or streaks. It cannot be removed by heating or cooling. Acetone-free nail polish remover can help.
Acrylic. Used for small drawings of rhinestones. It does not require heating, it is durable and reliable. Its traces look like transparent colorless spots. You can remove it with a spray liquid without acetone, Dimexide is also suitable. Protect your hands with gloves to avoid burns when using this chemically caustic solvent. The solution has a concentrated composition, so it is better to dilute it with a small amount of water so as not to harm the tissue.
PVA. On the one hand, the most unreliable method of attaching rhinestones, since many of them fall off during the first wash. On the other hand, PVA is the easiest to remove from the tissue. Traces of this glue look like dry and brittle white spots. You can get rid of it with water.
Epoxy. Apply cold. There is also a two-component, where the components are mixed together. Traces of this glue look like extremely hard transparent drops that bend or break with difficulty. It is removed with a mixture of alcohol and turpentine, acetone, and any solvents containing acetone.
When cleaning fabric from sticky stains There are a few things to keep in mind to keep your clothes from getting damaged:
If you use acetone, then a small amount of it must be applied to a cotton pad or swab. Wet not the front side (otherwise it will discolor), but the wrong side. On the reverse side, attach paper, preferably blotting, absorbing dirt. It should be changed periodically. Tip: If you don’t have blotting paper, you can replace it with a white paper towel.
An acetone-free spray, on the contrary, is applied to the “face”, after which it is removed with a disk or swab.
Turpentine is applied to the wrong side and the front side of the product to completely dissolve the glue. After that, the remnants are wiped off with a disk or swab. Tip: Be careful not to get any traces of sticky dirt on a clean cloth. Try to act quickly and accurately.
- Gasoline will work too. You need to apply it on the wrong side.
Precautionary measures:
Be sure to use gloves;
It is not recommended to smoke and drink alcoholic beverages while processing clothes with chemicals;
It is desirable that there are no animals and children nearby;
While working with chemicals, it is best to keep the windows open, or ventilate immediately after finishing.
After treatment with chemicals, white marks may remain. To completely remove them, it is best to use a washing machine with the addition of a quality laundry detergent.
Alternative cleaning methods
Chemical treatment is not the safest way. The fabric can wrinkle, change shape, even discolor somewhere (in the event that you used the product incorrectly).
Therefore, there are several more options with which you can safely and without damage remove the glue from the rhinestones.
Freezing
This method is suitable for PVA, the structure of which changes during cooling – it becomes brittle. It is best to put a little water on the glue so that it is saturated with it. This will give the effect of decomposing the substance into crystals that can be easily destroyed.
Moreover, freezing options can be very different:
Pack clothes stained with glue in a tight bag. This will prevent excess odors and sticking to the grate. It is necessary to withstand freezing for 6-8 hours. The longer, the more fragile the PVA structure becomes.
In the frosty season, if the entire refrigerator is packed to capacity, the laundry must be hung out on the street. It is better to do this on a balcony or loggia, since it is not possible to control the safety of things placed on a common house dryer;
If it is impossible to hang things out on the street or on the loggia (including due to the high air temperature), and the refrigerator is packed to capacity, then you can use a special aerosol with freezing. It cools the fabric down to -50 degrees Celsius.
After the clothes have cooled, you can get down to business, armed with something heavy and hard to break the structure that has become. Remove residue with a brush.
Freezing can be carried out several times if the effect does not fully satisfy you.
Термообработка
This method is recommended to be used very carefully so as not to damage the fabric. Many bypass it, preferring to make a patch on the area with glue. But if you decide on heat treatment, then you need to know some of the nuances. Most importantly, study the composition of the adhesive in order to understand whether to use the heat treatment option or not.
The fabric is covered with paper on both sides. You can also try a white cotton canvas instead. Set the iron to the lowest temperature and start ironing carefully. Over time, the adhesive fibers will begin to soften and stick to the surface of the paper. It needs to be changed from time to time. When the main part of the pollution is removed, the temperature should be increased. Under its pressure, the softened residues are absorbed into the bottom “pad”.
A soldering iron is used. To do this, wear gloves so as not to burn yourself. Attach the soldering iron to the surface of the rhinestone. The heat will be transferred to the adhesive, which will gradually soften under the influence of temperature. The change in the structure must be monitored so that it does not spread, otherwise it will be impossible to remove the residues. Gently pry off the softened composition with the blade of a clerical knife and separate it together with rhinestones.
After treatment in any of these ways, you can run the wash in the machine with a “hot” mode for two hours, using a quality washing powder. The fibers will soften, which will also contribute to the rapid removal of adhesive residue.
