How to reduce oily skin: a lot of life hacks

Those who are tired of greasy shine, enlarged pores and makeup that “floats” an hour after application are concerned about the reduction of oily skin every day. We have collected valuable tips, useful recommendations, suitable beauty products for you.

Causes of oily skin

The oiliness of the skin is determined by genetics, so it is impossible to change this parameter. True, this does not mean that the activity of the sebaceous glands cannot be influenced, because it depends on many external and internal factors. So owners of oily skin are quite capable of keeping shine under control.

To begin with, let’s find out for what reasons the sebaceous glands work with excessive zeal.

  • Hormones. It is under their influence that acne and pimples appear in adolescents. When the hormonal background normalizes, greasiness decreases.

  • Stress. When we are nervous, the stress hormone cortisol is released. It promotes the production of signal molecules that force the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum.

  • Incorrect food. There are a number of products that we consume every day, unaware of their ability to increase the greasiness of the skin.

  • Inadequate care. We found three main mistakes which almost all owners of oily skin do.

Aggressive cleansing. Soaps and alkaline cleansers break the lipid barrier of the epidermis. To restore it as soon as possible, the skin increases the production of sebum.

Ignoring moisture. Oily skin needs water no less than dry skin: lack of moisture enhances the work of the sebaceous glands, and peeling provokes blockage of pores.

The use of alcohol-containing cosmetics. Considering that oily skin needs to be “dry”, its owners use alcohol-based products and achieve the opposite result – skin devoid of moisture produces more fat.

Proper nutrition

Seriously deciding to reduce the greasiness of the skin and the risk of rashes, give up certain dishes and products. Self-restraint is hard, but worth it. You will be proud of your willpower and excellent skin condition if you eliminate high-glycemic index foods from your diet, which increase blood insulin levels and indirectly increase sebum production. These include:

  • sugar and sweets;

  • white flour pastries and pasta;

  • white rice (including sushi and rolls).

    Whole milk is not a fast carbohydrate, but, according to some reports, it also stimulates the activity of the sebaceous glands and provokes acne.

    Give up flour and sweets

How to reduce oily scalp and body

scalp

If you have oily hair, try to wash it without scratching your scalp. This is not the only advice.

  1. The water temperature should be close to room temperature.. Too hot water will increase sebum secretion and hair will get dirty faster.

  2. Use shampoos and conditioners designed specifically for oily scalps. Our choice:

  • Toning Balm Conditioner Botanic Therapy, Garnier, with tea tree oil.

  • Regulating Shampoo Dercos, Vichy, with salicylic acid.

Body skin

With oily skin, increased sebum production can be observed in the shoulders, back and chest – in areas where there are sebaceous glands. In order not to provoke blockage of pores and the appearance of pimples, you must follow the following rules of care.

  1. Shower regularly. If you’re exercising, it’s especially important to do this right after your workout, as sebum plus sweat is a favorite environment for acne-causing bacteria.

  2. On sebaceous areas, use cleansers for oily skin. Soap in the company with hot water dry the skin, which ultimately ends in increased sebum secretion. Washing gels remove impurities gently and effectively.

  • Cleansing foaming gel for oily skin Effaclar, La Roche-Posay, removes excess sebum, contains neither soap nor alcohol, suitable for sensitive skin.

  • Cleansing Refreshing Gel Purity Thermal, Vichy, addressed to all skin types, cleans qualitatively, but at the same time delicately, softening hard tap water.

Use scrubs or a Clarisonic device with a body attachment several times a week. Oily skin, including body skin, responds gratefully to exfoliation treatments. After exfoliating, don’t forget to toner your skin to restore the pH balance.
