Oil stains are unpleasant because they quickly eat into the fibers of the fabric. And this means that you need to act very quickly. How to effectively remove sunflower oil from clothes? The following are the most effective ways to deal with the problem at home.
Fabric pretreatment
fresh spot
If the sunflower oil stain is fresh enough, you can try to remove it using a simple and affordable express method. The first step is to moisten the borders of the contaminated area with water: this will prevent further spread of oil through the fabric.
Then gently blot the stain with a paper or cotton napkin – it will absorb the remnants of fat (in no case should you use synthetics – artificial material not only absorbs oil worse, but can also stretch it even more over the fabric). The last step is to apply a small amount of liquid dishwashing detergent and leave for a few minutes. After rinse under running warm water and send things to the wash.
stubborn stain
To simplify the process of removing an old oil stain, it is first necessary to soak the contaminated area. A simple soap and soda solution is excellent at softening fabric fibers and helping to remove oil faster. It is not difficult to prepare an effective composition: for this you need laundry soap, baking soda and water.
First you need to grate 1/4 of the laundry soap (the chips should be fine – so the soap will dissolve faster). Then add to it 2 tbsp. warm water and put in a water bath or microwave. When the soap is completely dissolved, and the composition becomes homogeneous, add 1 tbsp. baking soda and mix well. The resulting mixture is enough to soak a small spot (it is not necessary to soak the whole thing).
Effective Ways to Remove Vegetable Oil
Glycerol
This is an excellent solution for delicate fabrics. To clean the product from sunflower oil, you will need a small amount of glycerin, heated to a noticeably warm state (the substance should not boil, but it should be hot enough). A water bath or microwave is suitable for heating glycerin.
Wet a cotton swab in a heated substance and gently apply the composition to the fabric – its fibers should be well saturated. For effective removal of sunflower oil, as a rule, it is enough to wait for 40-50 minutes. Then thoroughly rinse the treated area under running water.
Petrol
The gasoline used should be only of high quality, as purified as possible. The presence of impurities in the composition can lead to unpredictable results: the stain will remain in place, and the thing will become unusable. Before using gasoline, move to a well-ventilated area that does not have open flames.
Method No. 1. Dip a cotton swab or cloth in gasoline and gently blot the oil stain. Then wait until the caustic composition is completely eroded from the fabric. After that, you need to wash the oil trace manually and only then send it to the washing machine.
Method No. 2. Gently moisten the oil stain in gasoline, walk along the edge of the contaminated area with a cotton swab moistened with water. Then cover the fabric with paper and go through it with a hot iron. The last step is washing in soapy water.
Starch
You can use corn or potato starch with equal efficiency. This is an excellent tool even for delicate fabrics. To treat a stain from sunflower oil, you will need an iron, starch and a couple of napkins (paper or fabric). The first step is to dampen the stain a little. Then put a napkin under it.
Sprinkle 1 tbsp over the stain. a spoonful of starch (depending on the size of the contaminated area, the amount of starch can be changed – the main thing is that it completely covers the stain). Cover with a second napkin and gently iron with an iron heated to medium temperature. Hot starch quickly adsorbs all vegetable fat from tissue fibers. The last step is washing with powder.
Turpentine + Aqueous Alcohol
A powerful mixture that will quickly and effectively remove even an old vegetable oil stain. Turpentine is mixed with water and ammonia in a ratio of 2:1:0,5. To increase the effectiveness of the procedure, you can add a few drops of liquid detergent to the resulting mixture. Using a napkin made of natural fabric or paper, apply the composition to the oil-contaminated area and leave to act for 15-20 minutes. After washing the product in the standard mode.
Dentifrice
Far from the most common household remedy after the advent of toothpaste. But good housewives know how effective it is in the fight against various pollution. Dissolve a small amount of tooth powder in warm water: you should get a thick mass.
The resulting composition is applied to the contaminated fabric. It is convenient to use an old toothbrush for this. Gently rub the white crystals into the fabric. Rinse with warm water and repeat the procedure several times until the pollution disappears completely. Then wash the item with detergent.
Salt
A simple and gentle way to remove pollution from sunflower oil. Salt can even be used on dyed and delicate fabrics. White salt crystals are an excellent adsorbent. To effectively remove a greasy stain from clothes, it is enough to apply salt to it, after mixing it with a small amount of water until a homogeneous thick slurry is obtained. Leave until completely dry. After that, shake off the remaining salt from the product and send it to the wash (if the product was pre-soaked, the salt must be applied dry – it will absorb water along with the oil residue).
Mustard powder
This product is not suitable for white items, as it may leave a yellowish mark on them. To clean clothes, it is enough to use an easy-to-prepare composition: 2 tbsp. Mix tablespoons of mustard powder with a little water (you should get a thick mixture). Apply it with any improvised means to the contaminated area and leave to act for 1-2 hours. The composition must dry well. Remove its residues and send the product to the washing machine.
Bonus: emergency option
This method is used if the above were ineffective or unavailable. In this case, you can use a powerful mixture, which is only suitable for “hardy” materials. Alcohol is taken in equal proportions (ammonia liquid is also suitable) and turpentine. There is added a mass obtained from laundry soap dissolved in water. The finished composition is applied very carefully, in a small amount. Pre-place a fabric or paper napkin under the product. As a rule, the stain is removed very quickly. The last step is washing with regular powder.
