We have a more infectious sub-variant of the Omicron BA.5 and another wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Europe, unfortunately, is at its center. The infection statistics took off, among others in Germany and France, well over 100 cases per day. In Poland, this is not the case, but we are already seeing a sharp increase in infections week to week. What’s the worst we can do in this situation? Dr. Aneta Afelt, whom we asked about it, answered briefly. You have to take her words to heart.

A sharp jump in coronavirus infection in Poland

At the end of June (June 23-29.06) we had 2422 confirmed cases of coronavirus infection in Poland. The next week brought 4163 cases of illnesses. Today it is over 7 thousand. (according to the last weekly report of the Ministry of Health, there are exactly 7569 of them). These are official statistics, based on the results of tests performed only in a hospital or primary health care.

– Let’s not forget that in Poland, monitoring of coronavirus infections is only conventional. Testing is actually gone, we have more “on demand” testing when someone suspects an infection, or self-testing. Therefore, it is not known what number of infections we are dealing with – Dr. Aneta Afelt emphasized in an interview with Medonet.

It is worth recalling that when we exceeded a thousand cases of COVID-19 a day for the first time, Dr. Franciszek Rakowski from the Center for Mathematical and Computational Modeling at the University of Warsaw assessed in Gazeta.pl that in fact, «we can talk about 18-20 thousand. real cases ».

«We cannot be surprised that we have more and more infections»

We are far from the increases currently recorded by France, Germany and Italy (as of July 12, it was 182 thousand, 127,6 thousand and 143 thousand, respectively). However, we must take into account the fact that the holiday travel season has just started (remember that traveling is a big risk factor). Moreover, many people plan to spend their holidays abroad. – So it can be assumed that the high wave of infections, so typical of what is happening now in the Germans or the French, is ahead of us – predicts Dr. Afelt.

The researcher draws attention to another important issue: – We have emerged from all the restrictions that bother us so much (although the mask, distance and washing hands are not restrictions that ruin life and take away freedom). And since with the warm weather we returned to the so-called full of life, we cannot be surprised that we have more and more infections. After all, the virus has been with us all the time, and now it is not too bad, I would even say that it is getting better – notes Aneta Afelt.

The worst and the best what we can do now? Dr. Afelt is straightforward

The next wave of the coronavirus pandemic has unfortunately become a fact. What is the worst thing we can do in such a situation? Dr. Aneta Afelt has no doubts: – The worst thing is to pretend that nothing is happening – he says bluntly and adds: – The situation requires us to return to wearing masks in public places: cinemas, restaurants, galleries, churches, public transport, etc.

Check out the first biodegradable face masks on the market, available in affordable packages. The offer also includes biodegradable FFP2 masks.

A few days ago, Minister Niedzielski recommended people from risk groups (aged 70+ and people with impaired immunity) to return to wearing masks and using the DDM principle (disinfection, distance, mask) in closed spaces, in particular in shops and public transport. .

Dr. Afelt points out one more thing: – We must remember how important self-isolation is. We must not forget the rule: you are sick, stay at home. It saves the lives of others. And it’s not just about not spreading the coronavirus, it’s also about other viral diseases, even the seemingly banal cold – he warns.
